Beginning with the first season in 1974, VOICEBOX: Opera in Concert has been a champion of rarely heard operatic repertoire performed by the finest of emerging Canadian vocalists… and the vision is as vital today as ever. The season begins on Sunday, October 30, 2016 with SHAKESPEARE 400, a tribute to the Bard of Avon, featuring music using and inspired by Shakespeare’s texts. The concert will be led by pianist Narmina Afandiyeva with assistance from Chorus Director Robert Cooper and the VOICEBOX: OIC Chorus. Baritone Michael Nyby will lead a roster of emerging artists including Holly Chaplin, Gena van Oosten, Diego Catalá, Stephanie Kallay, Anthony Rodrigues and Mikhail Shemet in music by Berlioz, Verdi, Thomas, Gounod, Salieri, Bernstein and Cole Porter.
Bellini’s romantic tragedy I CAPULETI E I MONTECCHI follows on Sunday, November 20 at 2:30 pm. Though not directly based on Shakespeare’s play, Romeo and Juliet are at the centre of Bellini’s touching tale of young love betrayed by politics and family rivalries. The bel canto beauty of this touching work will glow as sung by Anita Krause as Romeo, Caitlin Wood as Juliet with Tonatiuh Abrego as Tybalt. The VOICEBOX: Opera in Concert Chorus under Robert Cooper will shine in the rousing choruses for the Montagues and the Capulets, all guided from the piano by music director Raisa Nakhmanovich.
Hailed by many as the father of the symphony, Haydn was also an opera composer of distinction. His stage works were written for the Esterházy Palace Theatre and his 30-year patron, Prince Nikolaus I. Esterházy, lavishly supported Haydn’s genius. On Sunday, February 5, 2017, VOICEBOX: Opera in Concert presents the Toronto Premiere of L’ISOLA DISABITATA by Haydn, conducted by Kevin Mallon leading the Aradia Ensemble. Company debuts are made by soprano Valérie Bélanger as Silvia and mezzo-soprano Marjorie Maltais as Constanza. Alexander Dobson returns to the VOICEBOX stage as Enrico after his stellar performance in KAMOURASKA.
Rounding out the season on Sunday, March 26, 2017 will be Mussorgsky’s KHOVANSHCHINA in its Canadian Premiere. Sung in Russian, the work is a gripping tale of conflict between the old ways of the ancient Rus and the new world introduced by Peter the Great. Pianist Narmina Afandiyeva returns as pianist and music director leading a cast including Emilia Boteva, Andrey Andreychik and Dion Mazerolle with the VOICEBOX: Opera in Concert Chorus.
