For Autumn 2016, the Ustinov Studio's Artistic Director, Laurence Boswell, returns to North America for his inspiration, following a season of French-Canadian Drama and three previous American Seasons.
Nancy Meckler will direct Canadian John Mighton's poignant comedy, HALF LIFE, about an octogenarian love affair, and Laurence Boswell himself will direct the eminent actors Tanya Moodie and Joseph Marcell in TROUBLE IN MIND by the pioneering African-American dramatist Alice Childress.
This award-winning comedy is a love story between two elderly residents in a nursing home. Patrick was a mathematician and codebreaker, Clara is a beautiful innocent with a fading memory. Will their adult children be able to come to terms with their own feelings as the romance between their parents blossoms?
Half Life explores the nature of memory and aging and the transformative power of love with humour and tenderness.
Nancy Meckler returns to the Ustinov Studio having directed the hugely-acclaimed Play Strindberg in the 2014 season of Three Black Comedies. The first woman to direct at the National Theatre (with Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?), she is best known for her work with the universally-acclaimed Shared Experience for whom her productions included the award-winning Anna Karenina, Heartbreak House, True West, The Birthday Party and Bronte.
John Mighton is an acclaimed Canadian playwright (A Short History of Night, Body and Soul, Scientific Americans and The Little Years). He is also a professor of mathematics. He was a script advisor on the film Good Will Hunting and his play Possible Worlds was made into a film directed by Robert Lepage.
