Drayton Entertainment’s world premiere production of Marathon of Hope: The Musical, based on the life and legacy of Terry Fox, completed its run at the St. Jacobs Country Playhouse by entertaining 10,365 theatregoers and collecting $60,760 in donations for The Terry Fox Foundation and cancer research.
The new Canadian musical left audiences inspired to give, with $51,817 in optional donations made through the box office and company members collecting buckets of spare change as theatregoers exited the auditorium following each of the 32 performances presented.
An additional $8,943 was raised through a daily 50-50 raffle conducted at each performance, where 50% of the proceeds went to the winning ticket and 50% to The Terry Fox Foundation.
"Marathon of Hope: The Musical, first and foremost, is about Terry’s pioneering impact on cancer awareness and the legacy of hope he instilled in Canadians coast to coast," says Alex Mustakas, Artistic Director of Drayton Entertainment. "We are thrilled that audiences were moved by the production and inspired to support The Terry Fox Foundation. In telling Terry’s story, we hoped to raise awareness of the incredible work done by this organization, but the results have exceeded our wildest expectations."
The production will be featured on two Drayton Entertainment stages in 2017: Dunfield Theatre Cambridge (May 15 to June 4), and King’s Wharf Theatre in Penetanguishene (June 7 to June 17). In addition to regular performances, multiple dates are dedicated exclusively to schools so that teachers can expose their students to the enduring legacy of Canada’s greatest hero.
Marathon of Hope: The Musical was developed in consultation and with the full endorsement of the Fox Family by Drayton Entertainment, a not-for-profit registered charitable arts organization operating seven live theatres throughout Ontario.
“We have been thrilled to work closely with Drayton Entertainment to develop this musical. We have been overwhelmed by the positive feedback about the show and the generosity of audiences, who feel personally connected to Terry and his story in an exciting new way,” says Darrell Fox, Terry’s brother and a Senior Advisor at the Terry Fox Research Institute.
To date, The Terry Fox Foundation has raised over $750 million dollars for cancer research. To make a donation today please visit www.terryfox.org/donate or phone toll free: 1-888-836-9786.
