Albert Schultz, Founding Artistic Director of Soulpepper Theatre Company, today announced a programming update for Soulpepper’s 2016.2017 season: due to conflicts in artistic scheduling, Lee Breuer’s The Gospel at Colonus, previously scheduled for May, 2017, has been postponed for future programming consideration. In its place, Soulpepper has confirmed Ntozake Shange’s seminal for colored girls who have considered suicide / when the rainbow is enuf. In this striking set of choreographed poetic monologues focused on the struggles of seven black women, Shange weaves a story of empowerment, repression, abuse, and love inspired in part by her own coming-of-age experiences. Celebrated for its vivid and powerful text and revered for its ultimate message of courage, for colored girls is a timeless and unforgettable exploration of femaleness. Award-winning Canadian artist Djanet Sears, in her Soulpepper debut, will direct.
The Tony Award-nominated and Obie Award-winning for colored girls who have considered suicide / when the rainbow is enuf runs from May 5 to May 31, 2017. Patrons with tickets to The Gospel at Colonus will be contacted by the Box Office for an exchange or refund.
