With a banner year behind it, the Storefront Theatre 2017’s Winter Season is all about starting a riot. Whether we’re screaming from the rooftops for water sustainability, crusading for forbidden love, or turning a historical masterpiece on its F#$%ing head, this season the Storefront stage is embracing anarchy and naughtiness to see w hat we can get away with.
#DIVINE It’s 2017, and it’s time to riot. The Storefront Theatre cracks a new year open with a political banger. Natalie Frijia’s new Canadian play, DIVINE, takes place in an Ontario without water. A pair of desperate bandits search for their last hope ——— a water diviner by the name of Penn. But the bandits aren't the only ones hunting Penn down. What if there's nothing left for Penn to divine? Co-Produced by the Storefront Arts Initiative’s resident company, the Red One Theatre Collective, DIVINE meshes art with activism, while featuring an all star, all female cast directed by Storefront Executive Director, Claire Burns . Set in Ontario’s dystopian future, DIVINE is a prophetic cautionary tale told through magical realism and true GRIT.
#DeceitfulAboveAllThings Pending the accuracy of meteorological predictions, this year’s ruthless winter is about to get a whole lot hotter. Genevieve Adam’s Deceitful Above All Things premiered at the Summerworks Festival in 2015 to huge critical acclaim. Set in Quebec 1667, two women: a pious unwed outcast, and a married woman harbouring a secret love for a Jesuit priest are forced to band together as they fight to carve out their place in the New World. Provocative and sexy, this historical Canadian drama directed by Tanya Rintoul , is a scorching tale of seething intrigue and romance. As the ice melts, and the steam rises, the sacred hearts of these two filles du rois begin to beat as they uncover passion and hidden desire in an untamed wilderness.
#StupidFuckingBird STUPID FUCKING BIRD by Aaron Posner sort of adapted from The Seagull by
Anton Chekhov , directed by Vinetta Strombergs . Posner’s widely critically acclaimed work was originally produced by legendary theatre group Woolly Mammoth Theatre Co. in Washington DC in May 2013, where it won the Helen Hayes award for best new play. Subsequently produced all over the US to rave reviews and sold out houses, this is the much anticipated Canadian premiere. An irreverent update, a completely fresh and inspired version of Chekhov's masterpiece looking at unrequited love and emotional misery in a entirely hilarious new way. A comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel. The cast includes Daniel Maslany, Brendan Hobin, Rachel Cairns, Karen Knox, Diane Flacks, and Richard Greenblatt.
