From December 1st to December 4, 2016, Théâtre français de Toronto presents Scattered in a rising wind / Un vent se lève qui éparpille; the theatrical adaptation of the unique novel from celebrated franco-ontarian author, Jean Marc Dalpé, which received the Governor General's Literary Award in 2000.
Scattered in a rising wind / Un vent se lève qui éparpille tells the story of a forbidden love. Four voices plunge us into a tumultuous tale. All the characters tell their side of the story about a disturbing love triangle that, driven by passion and consuming rage, rattles the collective memory of an entire village. There’s Marcel and his rose tattooed on his chest; Joseph, the good husband with a red pickup; Rose, on the edge of the Waba River, with her white patent-leather shoes; and Marie, her youth, with her red hair and grey-green eyes. This dramatic novel is adapted for the stage and its scattering wind will spare no one. Putting us face to face with characters inhabited by powerful emotions that propel them over to the forbidden, Dalpé highlights the duality of human nature where “reason” and “feelings” are often irreconcilable.
Powerful, disturbing and transcendent, this stage adaptation by Geneviève Pineault, Johanne Melançon and Alice Ronfard features the talented David Boutin, Roch Castonguay, Annick Léger, Robert Marinier, Milva Ménard and Bryan Morneau. The play is directed by Geneviève Pineault; stage design by Gabriel Tsampalieros; costumes by Isabelle Bélisle; lighting by André Rioux; and sound design by Marcel Aymar.
Playwright, novelist, poet, scriptwriter and actor, Jean Marc Dalpé receives the Governor General’s Literary Award in theatre for Le chien in 1988 and in 1999 for his collection Il n’y a que l’amour. He’s awarded the same prize a third time for his noveI, Scattered in a rising wind / Un vent se lève qui éparpille, in 2000. Two universities awarded him a honoris causa PhD for his body of work: the Laurentian University in 2002 and the University of Ottawa in 2010. After studying at University of Ottawa’s Theatre Department, Jean Marc Dalpé continued his training at the Conservatoire d’art dramatique de Québec. Back in Ontario, he co-founds Théâtre de la Vieille 17 in 1979, and then relocates to Sudbury in 1981 where he partakes in over fifteen productions at Théâtre du Nouvel-Ontario as both an author and an actor. After several years of absence, he steps back onto the TNO stage in 2008 in SLAGUE : l’histoire d’un mineur. He is awarded in 2012 the Prix Rideau Awards for Outstanding Performance of the Year for his role as Mercier in II (Deux), a play by Mansel Robinson which he translated. These two plays were presented at Théâtre français de Toronto in 2010 and in 2013 respectively.
