In this exhilaratingly original, multimedia one-man show, actor / comedian / radio broadcaster Tetsuro Shigematsu (Huffington Post columnist, star of Spike/MTV’s The Deadliest Warrior, and former host of CBC’s The Roundup) tells the dynamic story of Akira, his emotionally distant father whose legacy is felt beyond his lifetime.
From the ashes of Hiroshima to swinging 1960s London, Akira’s incredible personal history continues to influence two generations. Though separated by language, culture and history, what truly keeps father and son apart are their similarities.
“I couldn’t help but hear the incredible amount of talk this work generated after its sold out debut in Vancouver last year. West of the Rockies, it was on the top of the reviewers’ year-end lists and when you see it, you’ll know why.” – Jillian Keiley, Artistic director, NAC English Theatre
Nominated for five 2016 Jessie Richardson Theatre Awards, including Outstanding Production, Actor and Direction, Empire of the Son is a funny, emotional and deeply thoughtful portrayal of parent/child relationships.
“Empire of the Son is exquisite. It’s also painstakingly honest… the storytelling is poetic, associative—and often funny. I can’t say enough good things about Empire of the Son… one of the best shows of the year.” – Georgia Straight
Writer/performer Tetsuro Shigematsu is joined by Artistic Producer Donna Yamamoto; Director and Original Concept Dramaturg Richard Wolfe; Dramaturg Heidi Taylor; Set Designer Pam Johnson; Lighting Designer Gerald King; Costume Designer Barbara Clayden; Sound Designer Steven Charles; Audio Dramaturg Yvonne Gall; Video Design Consultant Remy Siu; Props Master Carol MacDonald; Stage Manager Susan Miyagishima; Technical Directors Jeff Harrison and Fraser MacKinnon.
