Passing Strange – dubbed by the Washington Post as “the musical anyone who adores ‘Hamilton’ must see!” – has officially landed in Toronto. A co-production by award-winning theatre companies Acting Up Stage Company and ObsidianTheatre, Passing Strange will take to the stage at Toronto’s celebrated Opera House Theatre starting January 24th and will run through to February 5th, 2017.
A bold coming-of-age story interspersed with sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll, Passing Strange is director Philip Akin’s first foray into musical theatre. Its brave and boisterous story will be brought to life by a cast of Toronto’s best: Jahlen Barnes (Shaw’s Sweeny Todd, Alice in Wonderland), Divine Brown (Juno-Award Winning Artist), Beau Dixon (Canadian Stage’s Titus Andronicus, As You Like It), Peter Fernandes (Soulpepper’s The Just, Incident At Vichy), David Lopez (Mirvish’s Kinky Boots), Sabryn Rock (CTV’s Saving Hope, The Listener) and Vanessa Sears (Mirvish’s Kinky Boots, Young People’s Theatre’s Wizard of Oz).
Set in the late 1970s, Passing Strange tells the story of The Youth, a black teen who leaves everything he knows to travel Europe in search of not only himself, but a place to call home. Winner of the 2008 Tony Award for Best Book of a Musical and three Drama Desk Awards including Best Musical, Passing Strange has been recognized universally for its originality, authenticity and powerful score.
