The Yellow Door Theatre Project will be staging a musical at the FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre next week.
The Niagara-on-the-Lake-based theatre group is set to present the family musical The Little Prince at the arts centre in downtown St. Catharines, with the production running Dec. 14-18.
Adapted for the stage by Robert Ursan from the 1943 novella by Antoine de Saint-Exupery, the production is a musical tale of a pilot, stranded in the Sahara Desert, who comes in contact with a prince who proceeds to tell the story of his life and adventures upon his home planet and the characters he meets.
“It’s a great opportunity where our young people will be taking to the stage with some talented theatre veterans,” said Andorlie Hillstrom, founding director of Yellow Door Theatre Project. “It’s a chance for them to work alongside some very experienced adults.”
The musical adaptation features Shaw Festival alumni Jeff Meadows and Jenny L. Wright, leading the cast of gifted young theatre artists from across the Niagara region - all students of the Yellow Door Theatre Projects training program for young people.
Directed by Molly Atkinson, The Little Prince is choreographed by Elodie Gillett, with musical direction by John-Luke Addison. Also part of the production team are musical composer Robert Ursan, set and costume design by Tammy Fenner, lighting design by Gavin Fearon, and stage management led by Leigh McClymont.
Student performances take place at 12:30 p.m. from Dec. 14-16, with an additional student show on Dec. 14 at 9:30 a.m. Evening shows run Dec. 16-17, at 7:30 p.m., with a Sunday matinee on Dec. 18th at 2 p.m.
Tickets for the show are available through the theatre company website, www.yellowdoortheatre.com or by visiting the First Ontario Performing Arts Centre box office at 250 St. Paul St. in St. Catharines, or by calling 905-688-0722.
Hillstrom says the cast has been working hard in advance of the performance out of the theatre company’s new production facilities, the Redekopp Creative and Performance Arts Centre in Virgil.
That space will be showcased during a fundraising event this weekend as Yellow Door Theatre Project is set to present a fundraising event, A Christmas Carol: A Live Radio Play, on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 9-10, at centre, 504 Line Two Road in Virgil. Doors open at 7 p.m., with the show beginning at 7:30 p.m. Proceeds from the radio play are supporting with the staging of The Little Prince.
Tickets are $15 for adults, $5 for children (up to the age of 13) or $30 for a family of four (each additional member is $2). Tickets are available online at www.yellowdoortheatre.com or at the door on the night of the event.
