Opening January 20, Hart House Theatre is pleased to present a musical based on Stephen King's well-known revenge thriller, Carrie: the musical. Directed by Toronto theatre icon, Richard Ouzounian, and starring a cast of young performers, Carrie: the musical promises to deliver musical theatre with a youthful flair and the high calibre production style for which Hart House Theatre is known.
Tormented at school by the 'cool' kids and smothered at home by her religious zealot mother, Carrie is a true outcast. She's had enough and now she has her own way to get back at them ...Based on Stephen King's bestselling novel, Carrie: the musical shows us just what happens when bullies push too far.
We are pleased to welcome back Director Richard Ouzounian for this production. Now in retirement after 15 years as the Theatre Critic for the Toronto Star, Richard has directed, written or acted in over 250 shows since he began his professional career in 1972. When asked why he wanted to bring this show to our theatre, Richard has this to say:
"Why did I want to direct Carrie at Hart House? Because it belongs here.
Some people see it as a Grand Guignol epic filled with blood and horror. And yes those elements are there. But when Stephen King wrote the original novel over 40 years ago he was inspired by his memory of two outcast girls from his high school who were persecuted mercilessly by their fellow students.
That's what drew me to the piece. It's the story of the ultimate outsider and what happens when she's pushed too far.
Despite all the anti-bullying messages out there, young people of all ethnic and gender identifications are still subject to abuse from their peers simply because of who they are.
That's why the acting company of Carrie are diverse in many different ways. We're creating a world where everyone wonders how they fit in. Just like being at a large urban university in Toronto in 2017.
We are all Carrie. Truly."
Helping to shape the show are Music Director Giustin MacLean and Choreographer Amanda Nuttall. Tasked with creating the high school and home of Carrie's torment are three celebrated designers: the design team of Joe Pagnan (set), Andrew Cleveland (costumes) and Siobhán Sleath (lighting).
