Richard Rose, Artistic Director of Tarragon Theatre, is pleased to announce the new year will arrive with the Toronto debut of Sequence, by eye surgeon, filmmaker, musician and playwright Arun Lakra and directed by Tarragon’s former Associate Artistic Director Andrea Donaldson. The play runs January 3 - February 12, 2017 (opening January 11) in the Mainspace.
Do you believe in luck? A man successfully bets double or nothing on the Super Bowl coin toss for twenty years in a row. A professor races the clock on a ground-breaking discovery to cure the disease that is causing her own progressive blindness. Two fascinating stories intertwine like DNA, examining the interplay between science, faith, probability and luck.
Both a writer and doctor, Lakra is an active member of Calgary’s medical and artistic communities, dividing his time working as a playwright and eye surgeon. A writer with multifaceted interests, in Sequence Lakra draws on his medical knowledge to create a smart, complex work. Lakra describes the play’s structure as “reflecting the double helix of DNA,” creating an experience where “interpretation of the play would depend on the order in which you perceived things to happen.”
Sequence features a celebrated cast, including Kevin Bundy (Tarragon’s The Clockmaker, Soulpepper’s Jitters) as Theo, Jesse LaVercombe (Videofag’s Love Me Forever Billy H. Tender), Ava Jane Markus (Outside the March’s Terminus) and Nancy Palk (Tarragon’s Wormwood, Tarragon’s You Will Remember Me).
The play comes to Tarragon following a successful run in Calgary. Lakra has received several awards for the piece, including the Betty Mitchell Award for Outstanding New Play (2013), Calgary Theatre Critics Award for Best New Script (2013), Grand Prize - Alberta Playwriting Competition (Alberta Playwrights’ Network, 2011) and Joanne Woodward/Paul Newman Award for Drama (Bloomington Playwrights Project, 2013).
“We can’t wait to see audience reactions to Sequence. Depending on a person’s experience and scientific knowledge, they’re sure to experience the play in different ways,” notes Richard Rose, “We’re excited to host a piece so intelligent and enthralling - and with such a fantastic cast - it’s a great way to kick off 2017.”
