Crow’s Theatre is thrilled to present The Wedding Party as their 34th season, 2017 winter/spring season opener and the inaugural play to open the doors of the new Streetcar Crowsnest on January 12th, 2017. A co-production with Barrie’s Talk Is Free Theatre, The Wedding Party is on stage in Toronto through to February 11th, 2017.
From the award-winning creators of the beloved play I, Claudia, comes a new comedy about two families, a wedding, mistaken identities, and love, love, love! Kristen Thomson and Crow’s Theatre Artistic Director Chris Abraham invite the audience to take a seat ringside on the ‘big day’ of The Wedding Party while an astonishing cast of the country’s leading actors including Jason Cadieux, Virgilia Griffith, Trish Lindström, Moya O’Connell, Tom Rooney, and Kristen Thomson herself, hit the dance floor, drink too much, and try to get along.
A play about a wedding in which the newly wedded couple never appear, The Wedding Party takes an honest and humorous look at the wedding ritual and the pitfalls inherent when two, unique families come together…forever. Sharply observant, acidly funny, and raw, The Wedding Party takes the veneer off ‘the most important day of your life’ in the way only Kristen Thomson can.
From Chris Abraham, Director
“It means a great deal to me to be opening our new theatre with Kristen’s play,” says Abraham. “My creative partnership with her has been one of the greatest gifts of my career. She always seems to capture the essential joys and heartbreaks of her subjects - The Wedding Party is no different.
He adds, “The Wedding Party is joyous, nightmarish and just a great deal of laughter. It is fundamentally about families, how they are forged in the contemporary wedding ritual and the magic and disaster that is a part of making them happen. We can’t wait to open this play and our new home. It is absolutely the perfect show to kick off a great season of theatre in the east end.”
From Kristen Thomson, Writer and Star of The Wedding Party
“I like that weddings and theatre require parallel elements of witnessing and belief,” adds Thomson. “In a wedding, nothing actually happens beyond the exchange of vows spoken in front of witnesses. It is the belief and imagination of witnesses that make the event happen, something equally true of theatre. It is the belief of audiences, their goodwill and imagination, that for me is the very magic and beauty of theatre. It has been such a joy developing this show with Chris and Crow’s.”
Abraham, Thomson, and the cast are joined by set designer Julie Fox, sound designer Thomas Ryder Payne, lighting designer Kimberley Purtell, video designer Zack Russell, and costume designer Ming Wong.
The Wedding Party will run January 12 – February 11at the Streetcar Crowsnest (345 Carlaw Avenue) in the Guloien Theatre. Shows are scheduled Monday through Saturday at 8:00 p.m. (7:30 p.m. on January 13 and 18) and Saturday matinees at 2:00 p.m.
