OTTAWA February 18, 2016 – The hottest new play in Canada, Butcher opens in Ottawa and is already extended for seven performances. From March 3rd to 20th, Ottawa’s Great Canadian Theatre Company (GCTC) presents Butcher written by Nicolas Billon and directed by Artistic Director Eric Coates. Filling out the all-Ottawa cast is Sean Devine, Samantha Madely, newcomer Maggie Mojsej and father-son pair, John and Jonathan Koensgen. This will be the first time the two have performed together on stage in 16 years.
It’s Christmas Eve, and an elderly man in a foreign military uniform is left unconscious at a police station. He has a Santa hat on his head and a meat hook around his neck. He doesn’t speak English, and the only clue accompanying him is a lawyer’s business card that says “arrest me”. Together, the lawyer, a police officer and an interpreter set out to unearth a secret past that reveals itself one thrilling twist and turn at a time.
“Butcher is guaranteed to get its hook into you.”
- The Montreal Gazette
“Butcher is a razor-sharp play that serves up some bloody good entertainment.”
– NOW Toronto
“This is the most powerful thriller ever written for the stage in Canada” says Eric Coates, GCTC’s Artistic Director. “It is sure to shock even the most jaded observer of human behaviour.”
Butcher premiered at Alberta Theatre Projects in November of 2014 to outstanding reviews. With six productions during the 15-16 season, Nicolas Billon’s Butcher has become one of the most in-demand play in the country.
