[Mississauga ON, February 2016] Theatre Erindale is about to try something totally unique. “The Blackfriars Project” (named after one of Shakespeare’s theatres) gives you a chance to double your pleasure with not one but two related Shakespeare productions: The Comedy of Errors and Pericles, Prince of Tyre. Choose the farce or choose the adventure, but catch them fast, because they play for only five performances each! And on one very special occasion, audiences have the chance to catch them BOTH in one day! The double production starts with Comedy February 11-13, continues with Pericles February 25-27, and ends with performances of BOTH shows February 28th at the Erindale Studio Theatre.
The project features two extraordinary tales set (freely!) in ancient Persia. Two families torn apart by the wrath of Neptune and reunited – after a lifetime of trials – by the intervention of a goddess. One comes from the beginning of the bard’s career, the other from near the end.
David Matheson’s production of The Comedy of Errors is set in the early Christian era. The lunacy mounts as a straight-laced master and his servant arrive in a town famous for its piracy and black magic, only to be completely baffled by the demands and accusations of the locals – who put them in danger for their very lives! Not until the last minute do they discover what the audience has known from the start: that each of them has a resident identical twin who is prone to getting into a lot of trouble! The play is often thought to be Shakespeare’s first; it is certainly his funniest!
Patrick Young’s production of Pericles, Prince of Tyre is set several hundred years earlier in the same area of the world. In the age when Phoenicians ruled the Mediterranean waves, a young Prince sets out to find a wife. But his hard-won beloved dies in childbirth during a violent storm. The babe must be left to be reared in the next port, but is kidnapped by pirates. Can father and daughter survive the extremities life continues to throw at them to find each other again? Wildly popular in its day, this “limpidly beautiful” storybook adventure tale of trial and redemption, death and rebirth, initiates the final phase of Shakespeare’s career: the Romances.
The Comedy of Errors and Pericles Prince of Tyre together star the third year class of the Sheridan-UTM Theatre & Drama Studies Program. Both shows are complemented by Lumir Hladik’s beautiful projections. They each run for FIVE PERFORMANCES ONLY between February 11 and 28 at the Erindale Studio Theatre on the UTM campus. Single tickets are $12 or $18. Mississauga Transit Routes 44 and 110 will take you to the campus, and Parking in the CCT Garage is $6.00.
