Toronto, Ont. - The Watah Theatre, proudly announces the second of this year’s tri-annual festival in the 2015/16 KENTE Season, The Audre Lorde Works-In-Progress Festival Part II. The festival is a culmination of Raw Works by Artists-in-Residence in the 2nd term at The Watah Theatre. As part of The Watah Theatre’s dedication to professional development and mentorship, each year culminates with a selection of two MainStage productions from the previous year’s Artists-in-Residence. Part I of the Audre Lorde Works-in-Progress Festival saw the presentation of Artists-in-Residence and the MainStage production of the fabulous Raven Dauda’s Addicted and Part II presents Faduma Mohamed’s Oughtism.
Oughtism runs March 7th - 13th, and follows the life of Tariq, a nonverbal autistic savant. The play explores the hardships families endure, living with autism while poor, emphasizing on siblings of autism as they experience embarrassment, frustration and hopelessness. The play reinforces the belief that everyone deserves to experience love in all of its forms. Tariq falls for his neurotypical neighbour, Reign, and they slowly develop a romantic relationship.
Oughtism challenges the scientific pursuit to find a cure for autism. Golden Mind is an innovative biotechnological centre providing prenatal cures for autism; it’s spokesperson John White, champions a dangerous and unethical invasive procedure meant to ‘cure’ autism. When Reign’s sister, Leah begins working at Golden Mind, Reign considers undergoing the autism-extermination procedure. Ultimately, Oughtism urges audiences to question their own humanity.
Faduma Mohamed is a spoken word poet and storyteller who started writing at the age of eight and performing at the age of thirteen. Currently studying English, Women and Gender Studies at the University of Toronto, Faduma has completed her internship as an editorial writer with Urbanology Magazine and is one of the organizers of R.I.S.E Edutainment. Faduma Mohamed is an advocate for autism and believes in the power of envisioning dreams into life.
