Stage Door News
Violet’s best friend Linda is getting married. There are tea sommeliers and ribbon colourists. But Violet feels a grey hole expanding in her gut and isn’t sure what to do about it. Inspired by Plato’s Cave Allegory and a Toronto Caving Society meeting, she brushes off her bridesmaid responsibilities and ventures into a cave alone, in pursuit of concrete wisdom. But it’s hard being in a cave by yourself. Especially when someone follows you there.
For her follow up to the critically acclaimed With love and a Major Organ (Fringe Toronto 2012, Next Stage 2013, Strawdog Theatre Chicago 2015), Lederer teams up with indie darlings Birdtown and Swanville (Family Story, 36 Little Plays About Hopeless Girls) with whom she is a long-time collaborator.
The show mixes live hand-drawn projections, Birdtown and Swanville’s award-winning design aesthetic, and Lederer’s incisive wit to create a romantic comedy for the non-romantic. The show uses this unlikely genre to look at our isolation in the face of technology, the stigmatization of depression, and our obsession with coupling. As Lederer’s main character descends into the world of shadows and forms deep inside of a cave, she discovers that her obsessions and fears are probably not what they seem… and that love doesn’t have to be either.
The production stars Rebecca Applebaum (paper SERIES, Complex), Michael Eisner (Fat Pig) and Julia Lederer, and is directed by Birdtown and Swanville’s Aurora Stewart de Peña, with designs by Birdtown regulars Andrew Zukerman and Kristina McNamee
