After Le dîner de cons (The Dinner Game) and L’Emmerdeur (A Pain in the Ass), Francis Veber’s acclaimed character François Pignon returns to the TfT stage — and this time, he’s coming out of the closet!
Presented in French with English surtitles at the Berkeley Street Theatre May 11 to 29, Guy Mignault will direct the hilarious comedy Le Placard (The Closet) starring Pierre Simpson in his third turn as François Pignon. Jon Kaplan of NOW Magazine called Simpson’s “well-timed performance a gem” in 2009 while Christopher Hoile of Stage-Door.com found him “fabulous in the role of Pignon”.
Refusing to walk on politically correct eggshells, Francis Veber brings his beloved character back to the stage. This time Pignon has hit the depths of dull despair. After overhearing his colleagues’ plan to sack him from the condom factory where he works as an accountant, he decides to throw himself out the window. Stopped in the nick of time by his new neighbour, who suggests a ruse that will solve all his problems: pretend to come out of a closet he was never in…
Rolling Stone Magazine has called Le Placard “A bonbon spiked with mirth and malice. Writer-director Francis Veber, following The Dinner Game, offers another delicious treat.”
Directed by Guy Mignault. Featuring Pierre Simpson reprising the role of François Pignon. With Thomas Gallezot, Robert Godin, Christian Laurin, René Lemieux, Tara Nicodemo, Bahareh Yaraghi and Stéphanie Broschart as the voice of Christine.
Set and Lighting Designer: Alain Richer; Costume Designer: Nina Okens; Production & Stage Assistant: Lucas Bouissou Production & Stage Manager: Natalie Gisèle.
Le Placard will be Guy Mignault’s parting gift as he retires from his position as artistic director in June after a term of 19 exceptional years as the head of Théâtre français de Toronto.
A Théâtre français de Toronto production.
