Nightwood Theatre is proud to present the Toronto premiere of Refuge at the Tarragon Theatre Extraspace, 30 Bridgman Avenue, April 19 – May 8, 2016.
Penned by Nightwood Theatre co-founder and Officer of the Order of Canada, Mary Vingoe, Refuge offers a penetrating critique of our country’s refugee system and confronts the heightened paranoia that can so tragically disrupt our capacity to trust. Inspired by the award-winning CBC Radio documentary Habtom’s Path by Mary Lynk, Refuge was a finalist for the Lieutenant Governor's Masterworks Awards and nominated for best new play at The Merritts in Halifax.
An East African army deserter has landed in Nova Scotia without papers, where his mother already has refugee status. But even as his plight wins the support of an immigration lawyer, questions about his past actions begin to haunt the woman that has taken him under her roof. Are she and her husband harbouring a legitimate refugee – or a terrorist? A harrowing story about the pitfalls of seeking sanctuary in today’s suspicious world.
Kelly Thornton, Artistic Director of Nightwood Theatre says, “Refuge incites a deeply relevant conversation, confronting how even the most socially conscious Canadian can fall prey to internalized biases bred by a society that has grown to fear the ‘other’."
