This golden rule of entertaining is shattered in DISGRACED the 2013 Pulitzer prize winner by Ayad Akhtar beginning April 3rd at the Panasonic Theatre.
Amir Kapoor is a successful Pakistani-American lawyer who is rapidly moving up the corporate ladder while distancing himself from his cultural roots. Emily, his wife, is white; she's an artist, and her work is influenced by Islamic imagery. When the couple hosts a dinner party, what starts out as a friendly conversation escalates into something far more damaging. Despite their liberal views on the world and each other, everyone is drawn into a conversation that reveals their “tribal” roots in this provocative tale of big city aspiration and cultural assimilation that dares to face the truth hiding just below the deception.
Controversial and highly entertaining, DISGRACED is the “emotionally shattering” (Newsday) tale of the stories we tell our friends, the secrets we tell our lovers, and the lies we tell ourselves to find our place in the American Dream. “It’s terrific and turbulent.” (The New York Times). And it’s as much a story of what is happening here in Toronto as New York where it’s set.
DISGRACED premiered in Chicago in 2012 and was produced in the same year by Lincoln Centre Theatre Off-Broadway in New York. It had its Broadway premiere at the Lyceum Theatre in 2014. It has also been produced in London and in many world capitals. For the 2015-16 season it is among the most produced plays in North America.
