We are grieving the sudden and unexpected passing of Todd Charlton on the evening of April 15. Todd was just completing his seventh year of teaching the Sound and Electricity courses at Humber. He also designed sound for a number of productions at Humber Theatre, and was the mentor for many sound crews.
Todd was a born teacher. His passion for the theatre and for the place of sound in the theatre informed his passion for helping students to understand what sound can do – and how to do it well. He had a great talent for imparting concepts in a clear and vivid manner, even to students for whom sound and electricity were mysterious and threatening subjects. He was particularly delighted when he helped such students lose their fear and succeed in the courses, as he often did. Like all great teachers, he taught many lessons that applied well beyond his particular subject.
Todd brought an impressive body of professional experience to his classes. He was a leading sound designer who worked with many theatres including Soulpepper Theatre, the Tarragon Theatre, and the Shaw Festival. He had long associations with Young People’s Theatre, Theatre Sheridan, the Blyth Festival, and the Stratford Shakespearean Festival, where he designed sound for over fifty productions. He had just completed a technical rehearsal in Stratford on Friday evening. The Artistic Director of the Stratford Shakespearean Festival, Antoni Cimolino, has announced that this season’s production of All My Sons will be dedicated to Todd’s memory.
Todd lived in Stratford with his wife Melissa and their sons Harper, Jack and Devlin. We feel their loss deeply.
Todd Charlton will be sorely missed and fondly remembered by his many professional and academic colleagues, and the hundreds of students and graduates whose lives were enriched by knowing him.
