KINKY BOOTS is the story of how a community rallies together to save from bankruptcy a shoe factory that is the town’s major employer. Price & Sons has been around for generations, providing a livelihood to hundreds of people by making good-quality men’s shoes. But when it becomes more cost effective for shoe stores to purchase their inventories from factories in countries where the cost of labour is much much cheaper, Price & Sons finds itself without many customers — until a truly fabulous idea presents itself (in the form of Lola, the equally fabulous cabaret performers in search of good footwear for her act) and the business is saved — and so are the community’s jobs.
The same spunk and creativity is happening in Toronto right now. Shoe repair shops are almost extinct as many people would rather throw away an old pair of shoes, instead of repairing them, and buy a new pair. But a little while ago in Kensington Market, Sole Survivor opened up, a cobbler shop that provides such wonderful service, that its business has grown and a second location has opened on Dundas Street West. Owner Lorena Agolli's team is comprised of women with backgrounds in fashion, the arts, shoemaking and design. Very quickly, Sole Survivor has become a Toronto staple that has continued to grow with its customers and their leather goods.
KINKY BOOTS and Sole Survivor are coming together on Wednesday April 6th for a rather unusual but fitting event. On that night, all audience members attending KINKY BOOTS at the Royal Alexandra Theatre are welcome to bring a pair of shoes. Drop them off at the pop-up Sole Survivor shop located in the theatre’s Yale Simpson Lounge before the show and pick them up after the performance. While you’re enjoying KINKY BOOTS brilliant amalgam of joy, great music, superb performances and heart-lifting story, the Sole Survior crew will revive your tired, weathered footwear and shine them into a cluster that will be sure to dazzle everyone. FREE, of course!
About KINKY BOOTS
KINKY BOOTS brings together four-time Tony® Award-winner Harvey Fierstein (Book) and Grammy® Award-winning rock icon Cyndi Lauper (Tony® Award-winner for Best Score for Kinky Boots).
With songs by Grammy® and Tony®-winning pop icon Cyndi Lauper, this joyous musical celebration is about the friendships we discover, and the belief that you can change the world when you change your mind.
Inspired by true events, KINKY BOOTS takes you from a gentlemen’s shoe factory in Northampton to the glamorous catwalks of Milan. Charlie Price is struggling to live up to his father’s expectations and continue the family business of Price & Sons. With the factory’s future hanging in the balance, help arrives in the unlikely but spectacular form of Lola, a fabulous performer in need of some sturdy new stilettos.
With direction and choreography by two-time Tony® Award-winner Jerry Mitchell (Legally Blonde, Hairspray) and a book by Broadway legend and four-time Tony® Award-winner Harvey Fierstein (La Cage Aux Folles), KINKY BOOTS is the winner of 6 Broadway Tony® Awards including Best Musical, Best Score and Best Choreography.
