Like your favourite podcast come to life onstage… spontaneously.
This Canadian Life is an improvised look at a theme told through a variety of stories. Inspired by the wildly successful Ira Glass-hosted podcast This American Life, each week the cast takes audiences to familiar places, with unscripted stories that aim to capture contemporary Canadian culture in fresh and inventive ways. While paying tribute to the Chicago Public Radio program that inspired it, This Canadian Life will turn voices to action, radio to performance.
Creating engaging performances with characters plucked from your lives, This Canadian Life is a look at the stories that link us all; the places we all know; the feelings we all have. Some stories will be touching, others funny, still others will make you think.
“This American Life’s appeal is rooted in the belief that any story can be remarkable. Ira Glass and his team approach their subjects with the curiosity and sincerity of journalism while employing the techniques of fiction: scenes, characters and narrative threads... spinning stories they describe as being ‘personal and sort of epic at the same time’. That approach to storytelling is such a beautiful fit with the ethos of improvised theatre and why we knew this would be an ideal Bad Dog show. The best comedy does the same thing,” says director Julie Dumais Osborne.
Directed by Bad Dog Artistic Director Julie Dumais Osborne and Chris Ramelan (Canadian Improv Games) and featuring: Canadian Comedy Award-winner Sean Tabares (DnD Live), Nigel Downer (Second City mainstage), Christy Bruce (Blind Date), Ashley Comeau (head writer of Food Network’s Chef in Your Ear), Thomas MacKay (Associate Registrar at the University of Toronto), Ify Chiwetelu (host of Yas Kween), Michal Grajewski (Rick Mercer Report) & Rakhee Morzaria (Bad Dog Featured Players)
