April 22th From the savage minds that brought you The Skriker and Big Plans, The Storefront Theatre and The Scapegoat Collective join forces for their most ambitious production yet. Director Daniel Pagett (Trout Stanley Severely Jazzed, The Skriker Red One Theatre), explores a script laced with cryptic sin and magical realism in a world underscored by alternative hip hop and accented with puppetry. Written during Maghanoy’s (Dust, Gas, Ally & Kev) time in the Tarragon playwrights’ unit, Hangman follows the story of Alistair Prince Amponsah (Contempt Safeword.theatre, Lot and His God Desiderata) a man condemned to the gallows for blood crimes of unspeakable savagery. Braydon Alexander Thomas (On The Waterfront Haymarket Theatre West End London, directed by Steven Berkoff) the town’s moral commander in chief, is hell bent on justice despite the carnage wreaking Alistair’s jeering avowal of escape.
A thief of superhuman strength, Vanessa Trenton (Macbeth Wolf Manor), a limb snatching prison guard, Jon Blair (This Hour Has 22 Minutes CBC, Sunday Night Live The Sketchersons), a man of means on the warpath, Vince Carlin (Frankenstein Theatre New Brunswick, 12 Angry Men Rose Theatre), and a prophetic mute boy savant, Kaitlin Morrow (The Closet Monster Circlesnake, Macbeth Shakespeare in the Ruff) fill out Hangman’s cast of misfits.
The design team behind the alchemy of Hangman’s dusty borough are Jakob Ehman on sound, Jenna McCutchen as set and costume designer, puppets by Kaitlin Morrow, and lighting design by Melissa Joakim.
A western at heart with no moral compass, Maghanoy’s script offers no easy answers when it comes to who is good, bad, or ugly. Hangman will take you to the edge of the Hellmouth and ask you to drink moral turpitude, or be swallowed up.
