The Canadian Children’s Opera Company, in partnership with VIVA! Youth Singers of Toronto, Canadian Opera Company, Tapestry New Opera, the Canadian Music Centre, Schmopera, and Opera.ca is proud to present the Toronto Festival of Children’s Opera.
Opera for, by and about young people has exploded as an art form internationally, and some of the very best work is happening right here in Toronto. From May 29 - June 12, 2016, the young and young-at-heart will be amazed by the inspiration and creativity on display, from epic main-stage productions of The Hobbit and The Sword in the Schoolyard, to a lecture by award-winning Tolkien expert and children’s author David Day, to community performances by participants of the Canadian Opera Company’s After School Opera Program, to a special "Youth Night at the Opera" at Tapestry Opera’s The Rocking Horse Winner, and a day-long symposium on children’s opera for opera producers, artists and educators.

Producers, practitioners, educators, and artists are invited to join a conversation on children’s opera. Talks will explore best practices and approaches in developing operatic works for children or by children. Participants will learn about how opera and theatre for kids is currently being developed and play a role in imagining the future of the field.

Join Bilbo on his adventure with Gandalf (Canadian bass-baritone Giles Tomkins) and his dwarvish friends as they seek to outwit elves, goblins, wolves, and spiders alike in their quest to restore the Dwarf king Thorin Oakenshield to his throne. Originally premiered by the CCOC in 2004, The Hobbit has gone on to several international productions.
