OTTAWA April 6, 2016 – The world premiere of Janet Wilson Meets the Queen by Beverley Cooper will be staying at the Irving Greenberg Theatre Centre a little longer thanks to a four performance extension. This is the second play in the 15-16 season to be extended after Nicolas Billon’s Butcher received an additional 7 performances in March. From April 21st to May 8th, the newest work by Governor General’s Literary Award finalist Beverley Cooper, will be presented by Ottawa’s Great Canadian Theatre Company (GCTC) and directed by Andrea Donaldson (Tarragon Theatre’s Associate Artistic Director). Featuring some familiar faces to GCTC audiences, the cast includes Marion Day, Katie Ryerson, Beverley Wolfe and a newcomer to GCTC’s stage: Tony Adams.
Janet Wilson is a typical housewife in 1969, preparing to deliver a speech to the Imperial Order Daughters of the Empire. What could possibly go wrong? How about a heckling geriatric, a surly daughter, a philandering husband and a draft-dodging nephew, for starters? Welcome to Janet Wilson’s life: a darkly comic place that refuses to change as the world around her undergoes a monumental transformation.
”This play is a balancing act of comedy and heartache.” says Eric Coates, GCTC’s Artistic Director. “As our world changes rapidly, we must challenge complacency. I want people to see the importance of political awareness when they see this play.”
Janet Wilson Meets the Queen is the first play by Beverley Cooper to open at GCTC under the artistic direction of Eric Coates. Eric and Beverley worked together when he was Artistic Director at the Blyth Festival and commissioned her award-winning play Innocence Lost: A Play About Stephen Truscott. Janet Wilson Meets the Queen is the fourth play they have premiered together.
