Toronto, ON – Theatre Passe Muraille (TPM) and Cahoots Theatre will be co-producing ULTRASOUND, the debut play from deaf writer Adam Pottle, directed by Cahoots Theatre’s Artistic Director Marjorie Chan, and starring Chris Dodd in the role of Alphonse and Elizabeth Morris in the role of Miranda. ULTRASOUND will be in the TPM Mainspace from April 28 to May 15, 2016, and will be performed in English and American Sign Language (ASL) with integrated surtitles and projections. ASL/English Deaf Interpreted (DI) performances are available on May 5 at 7:30pm and May 14 at 2:00pm.
“This is not an agenda. This is our family.”
A Deaf couple struggle with the identity of their growing family. Will their child be hearing or deaf? Complications arise when their personal perspectives towards Deaf and hearing cultures brim to the surface.
Hailing from Saskatoon, deaf writer Adam Pottle is renowned for his exploration of Deaf and disability culture in his award-winning poetry and fiction, including Beautiful Mutants, Bereft, and Mantis Dreams: The Journal of Dr. Dexter Ripley. He continues this sharp investigation in a dramatic fashion with his debut play ULTRASOUND.
"Deaf and disabled people seldom get the chance to share their stories, whether in the theatre, in literature, in film or in television. For two major Canadian theatre companies to throw their weight behind a play like this constitutes a distinct shift in the artistic landscape, a shift that will hopefully spur other Canadian theatres into exploring these subjects." – Adam Pottle, playwright of ULTRASOUND
ULTRASOUND has two scheduled Deaf Interpreted performances in which Gaitrie Persaud will be providing ASL/English Deaf interpretation (DI) for the role of Miranda, which will be held on May 5 at 7:30pm and May 14 at 2:00pm. A Q&A will follow each of these DI performances.
ULTRASOUND has one scheduled Relaxed Performance on Saturday, May 7 at 2:00pm. Relaxed Performances are designed to welcome audience members who will benefit from a more relaxed performance environment, including those with an Autism Spectrum Condition, sensory and communication disorder, or a learning disability.
Theatre Passe Muraille is equipped with a ramp and wheelchair accessible washrooms. Cahoots Theatre and Theatre Passe Muraille have 20 FM system device units available for patrons, which includes 15 Steto and 5 Loop headset varieties.
Theatre Passe Muraille gratefully acknowledges and celebrates the ongoing support of their annual Season Sponsor BMO Financial Group and their 2015.16 Accessibility Sponsor TD Bank Group who is also the ULTRASOUND production sponsor.
