Rarely Pure Theatre, a Toronto theatre collective has partnered with Lionel Walsh at the University of Windsor to research The Michael Chekhov and Vahktangov Acting techniques. After utilizing their research in rehearsals for Choking the Butterfly, the team will bring the Canadian premiere of James Johnson’s lyrical yet gritty play to The Storefront Theatre.
Teenaged conjoined twins, Betty and Barney, are left to their own devices in an abandoned button factory after an operation to separate them. Thrown out of a cosy institution of bath times and warm needles they grew up in, they are now left with a suitcase packed with bottles of milk and cash – the land of milk and money they dreamed of as children. Both individually meet the troubled yet charismatic Brody who introduces them to the dark underbelly of a contemporary society riddled with drugs and voyeurism.
Rarely Pure Theatre has carved out a noteworthy place for itself in the Toronto independent theatre community, combining the talents of seasoned professionals and emerging artists to produce work of the highest calibre. Highlight productions include Martin McDonagh’s The Pillowman (2013 Best Independent Production nominee, Broadway World), As You Like It (4 nominations for the 2014 My Entertainment World Awards), and Thomas McKechnie’s Valkyrie (Four NNNN’s, and acknowledged in NOW’s Best of Fringe categories: Outstanding New Play and Outstanding Ensemble).
After being nominated for Best New Irish Play—BBC/Stewart Parker Trust Award 2009, this will be the first time that Choking The Butterfly appears on any Canadian stage. Windsor Alumni Christina Bryson (Best Actress Nominee, My Entertainment Awards; Liz in Jackie Boy, Award-Winning Feature Film; Fear Thy Neighbour, Discovery Investigation) and Michael Hogan (Jacques in As You Like It; Jack in The Importance of Being Earnest; Pozzo in Waiting For Godot) team up with Ken Caughey to deliver this intimate and intriguing production to Toronto audiences.
Finally set free and equipped with all the money in the world, can the twins survive separately, yet stay together?
