Toronto, ON - StudioBLR & Kid Switchblade Productions presents Bug, the thrilling, lurid and emotionally jarring play by Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning playwright Tracy Letts. Bug is directed by Jamieson Child, starring Lynne Rafter, Todd Preston, Jaclyn Nobrega, Luke Gallo and Ian McGarrett on stage at the Super Wonder Gallery Theatre (876 Bloor Street West) until May 27, 2016.
"Bug confines you in one woman's world of isolation and lost hope," said director Jamieson Child. "As it starts to peck at your brain and nerves with a growing madness that turns pretty sick and twisted by the end. This production is one wild ride."
The play takes place in late 90's Oklahoma and focuses on Agnes (Rafter), a middle-aged waitress who lives alone in a motel on a diet of cocaine and alcohol. Her world is consumed by tragedy and failed relationships, until she meets Peter (Preston), a troubled Gulf War drifter seeking a new life that Agnes can nurture - among a growing infestation of insects. Riveting and outrageous, Bug is an unflinching gaze at dependency and psychological trauma.
"Think blue-collar Hitchcock on cocaine, cigarettes and vodka. It's damaged human psyche and dope-sick love, for the stage. There's a level of depth to the shock and it makes for exciting theatre," said Child.
Design elements play a strong role in the show. Mike Zahorak's sound design and affecting ambient score accentuate the emotions and tension of the characters using music and noise to immerse us even more in the confines of a seedy motel in the mid-west.
Bug runs to Friday, May 27 at the Super Wonder Theatre inside the Super Wonder Gallery (876 Bloor Street West). Performances are at 8 p.m. The show is approximately two hours with an intermission. Tickets are $20, available by phone/text at 416-364-4556 or in person at the door one hour prior to show; cash sales only. For details visit: www.facebook.com/BUGtoronto/
