The Bloor St. Culture Corridor, Toronto's most diverse arts and culture district, welcomes everyone to Bloor St. West this June for film screenings, festivals, concerts, museum exhibitions, visual art, and special events taking place on the Bloor St. Culture Corridor throughout the month. The Bloor St. Culture Corridor also invites everyone to meet us at our table at the Annex Family Festival on June 26, and learn more about what's happening on the Bloor St. Culture Corridor.
The Alliance française de Toronto is delighted to invite people to discover the work of young photographers from the Lycée Français de Toronto during their annual photography contest on June 1 at 6pm. Alliance française, in partnership with the Gardiner Museum, is honoured to welcome Bertrand Rondot, chief curator for furniture and work of arts at Château de Versailles, who will give a lecture on the subject "Versailles, French château or Italian palace?" on June 7 at 7pm. Everyone is invited to the 2016 European Book Club on June 15 at 7pm at their Type Books Library. This session will focus on the novel The Girl Who Played Go by Shan Sa. Alliance française is pleased to announce two upcoming concerts by pianist Maxence Cyrin on June 8 at 9pm and Radio Elvis on June 17 at 8pm. Alliance Française Toronto's famous Wine & Cheese soirée will be back on June 8 at 7pm, too. Every Thursday, the Alliance Française de Toronto presents a movie at 7:30pm. The Bata Shoe Museum welcomes June with a series of themed events and a special exhibition by artist Marco Sassone opening June 9, in connection with Italian Heritage Month. Marco Sassone: His Boots and Other Works features new works inspired by the museum collection. On view June 9 through September 5. In celebration of National Aboriginal Day on June 21, the BSM is offering special programming including hands-on demos and crafts along with tours of our Arctic-themed exhibition Art and Innovation: Traditional Arctic Footwear from the BSM Collection. June 25 through July 3, complimentary tours at 2pm take you through the ground-breaking exhibition that challenges traditional concepts of who wears heels and why: Standing Tall: The Curious History of Men in Heels. This June, the Gardiner Museum marks the launch of the new Community Arts Space and the Make It Real Project, which brings together five community partners exploring four themes: interactivity, performance, community-engaged arts, and city building. From fort making to clay hand building, and experimental theatre to participatory workshops, there's something for everyone. The project will launch on June 28 with Place/Setting by AKIN Projects. Over the course of two weeks, five contemporary ceramists will lead open workshops in which visitors will create functional objects. As they are created and prepared for display, the works will slowly set the table for a community celebration and active installation. Visitors will be encouraged to share and trade the tableware created, reinterpreting the value placed on functional objects. Visit www.gardinermuseum.com for more details and a full list of events.
Musicians from around the world gather in Toronto for the annual Tafelmusik Baroque Summer Festival with three free concerts open to the public, featuring the Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra and Chamber Choir, and participants and faculty of the Tafelmusik Baroque Summer Institute. The Festival kicks off with "Delightfully Baroque" on June 6 at 8pm, at Trinity-St. Paul's Centre; then "Musical Interlude" on June 11 at 12:30pm at Walter Hall, University of Toronto; and finally "TBSI Orchestras and Choirs" on June 15 at 1pm, also at Walter Hall, University of Toronto. This June, Miles Nadal JCC will be a hotbed of cultural activity, with choir concerts, camp registrations and community celebrations. The MNjcc Community Choir kicks off the month with its 20th anniversary concert June 1 & 2. In the Gallery at the J is an exhibition of the winning submissions for the Jewish Music Week Student Art Contest. On June 11, the popular Shavuot All-Night Jewish Learning Festival returns from dusk until dawn, free admission and open for everyone. In the Al Green Theatre the comic film The Galilee Eskimos screens on June 19. Summer day camp registrations are in full swing, as are sign-ups for the Suzuki Music Camp. And adults can attend camps too: Wheel Dance, Latin Dance, Band, Theatre and Singers Institute sessions are offered for 2016. On June 26 is the free Annex Family Festival, when Bloor Street is closed between Spadina and Bathurst streets from 11am to 6pm for food, fun, music, fitness demos, street entertainers and a fantastic children's village. At The Royal Conservatory of Music, multi award-winning cabaret star Meow Meow returns to Koerner Hall Thursday, June 23 at 8pm, with her unique brand of 'kamikaze cabaret' and performance art exotica. She's been called "sensational" (The Times, UK), one of the Top Performers of the Year by The New Yorker, "The Queen of Chanson" by the Berliner Zeitung, and "a phenomenon" by the Australian press. Special programming for adults 2:30pm-6pm includes Music Appreciation classes, orchestra percussion demos, cello and harp demonstrations, and a reception. This month at the ROM, CHIHULY opens on June 25. This exciting exhibition features the extraordinary works in glass by internationally acclaimed artist Dale Chihuly. CHIHULY is the focus of the June 24 season finale of #FNLROM: Colour ROMproud. On June 30, ROM Daytime: Chihuly: Art in Context features Diane Charbonneau, the exhibition's guest curator from the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (MMFA). This event is free with ROM admission and RSVP. Continuing in June is the specially priced exhibition Tattoos: Ritual. Identity. Obsession. Art. Tattoos-themed lectures include The Cultural Heritage of Indigenous Tattooing: Medicine, Myth, Magic, and Meaning on June 14, and Art Fusion on June 16; Art Fusion includes access to the exhibition. Also in June visitors can enjoy A Third Gender: Beautiful Youths in Japanese Prints, the ground-breaking examination of gender structure in Edo Japan (1603-1868). Soundstreams presents Salon 21: Soundweavers on June 17 at 7pm at Gardiner Museum. Composer Emilie Lebel has been composing a work in collaboration with Jumblies Theatre, a hub for community-driven creativity. Join us for the premiere of her new work, and a discussion between Lebel, Ruth Howard, Artistic Director of Jumblies, and the community participants in the new work. At the Museum of Estonians Abroad/VEMU, the photo exhibition The Battle for Donetsk Airport is on view until June 12, 2016. On June 3 at 7pm, Viimsi High School Acting Club (Estonia), will be performing Exploring the World (Maailma avastamine) and A Story of a Tree (Kunagi aastate pärast). On June 17 at 11am the symposium "The Grand Old Man of Estonian Music, Roman Toi 100" will be taking place at Tartu College. A number of guests including Hirvo Surva and Triinu Ojamaa from Estonia, as well as Andres Raudsepp and Jean McKen from Canada will be talking about Toi as a conductor, composer and keeper of Estonian heritage. An exhibit dedicated to Toi's birthday in cooperation with the Estonian Theatre and Music Museum, will also be opened. The symposium is in English. All events are free of charge, however, a small donation is appreciated. The events take place at Tartu College. As a part of the R. Toi 100 celebrations, the Estonian National Opera Boys Choir, conducted by Hirvo Surva, will be performing on June 21 at 7:30pm at Koerner Hall. The Japan Foundation, Toronto hosts the touring ceramics exhibition "Yakishime- Earth Metamorphosis" until August 10. Yakishime, an ancient, high-temperature firing technique, produces unusual surface textures and colours. From household and tea ceremony pieces to contemporary sculptural objects, the exhibition showcases the versatility of Yakishime, including a number of works created by artisans who have been named Japanese Living National Treasures. The Istituto Italiano di Cultura and The Toronto Comic Arts Festival 2016 present FIOR, an art exhibition by Italian comic artist Manuele Fior. The exhibit runs through Thursday, June 30, 2016 at the Istituto and admission is free. It features 30 original illustrations from international newspapers, and 12 original illustrations from Fior's graphic novel "5000 KM per second," recently translated into English.
The Consulate General of Italy, the Istituto Italiano di Cultura, the Emilio Goggio Chair in Italian Studies, University of Toronto, and L'Altra Italia - ARIO, proudly present ITALY INSPIRES CANADA featuring Giorgetto Giugiaro in conversation with Paul Deutschman. The event is on Tuesday, May 31, 2016 at 6pm at Walter Hall, Faculty of Music, University of Toronto. Admission is free and RSVP is mandatory via Eventbrite. Giorgetto Giugiaro is Italy's most famous automobile designer. He has worked on supercars and popular everyday vehicles. He was named Car Designer of the Century in 1999 and inducted into the Automotive Hall of Fame in 2002. In addition to cars, Giugiaro designed camera bodies for Nikon, computer prototypes for Apple, Navigation promenade of Porto Santo Stefano and even developed a new pasta shape "Marille," as well as office furniture for Okamura Corporation.
