Studio 180 Theatre has always operated with a spirit of ensemble and collaboration. Our 2016/17 season focuses on deepening several key relationships – with a familiar producing company, with Canadian playwrights, with high school students and with our patrons and donors. Two major projects frame the upcoming 2016‑17 season.
STUDIO 180 IN DEVELOPMENT: FALL 2016 & SPRING 2017
In November and April, we will once again produce Studio 180 IN DEVELOPMENT. Last year we presented the new works of six playwrights. The rare opportunity to experience the creation of new theatre work was enthusiastically embraced by both public and high school audiences. This year, we are investing more time with fewer writers in order to more fully develop projects that can lead to mainstage productions in the near future. Public readings and stagings will once again be an essential component of Studio 180 IN DEVELOPMENT as we explore work by Paul Dunn, Hannah Moscovitch and Jason Sherman.
MY NIGHT WITH REG: WINTER 2017
In January, we begin rehearsing My Night with Reg, our fourth partnership with Mirvish Productions. A multi award–winning play by British playwright Kevin Elyot, the play tells the story of three friends who met during college and have reconnected more than a decade later, and deals both comically and dramatically with loyalty, friendship, love and betrayal. In some of our earlier work, such as The Normal Heart, Clybourne Park or Our Class, the plays’ issues and themes dominated. In much the same way that You Will Remember Me places the characters in the foreground, so too does My Night with Reg allow us to understand how greater themes can be revealed through human behaviour, with laughter as a life‑redeeming anchor. Previews begin February 10, 2017.
EDUCATION
Throughout our season, we will continue to deliver our education program, Studio 180 IN CLASS, to students across the GTA, and we’ll also be looking for ways to engage our audiences and donors more deeply in our creative process and exploration through our Beyond the Stage program.
