Astonishing sea creatures! A spectacular submarine! Plunge deep into the pages of Jules Verne's TWENTY THOUSAND LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA and get swept away. This inventive reimagining of the classic science fiction novel follows Jules, a modern-day raconteur, as he finds himself transported into his favorite story. When he climbs aboard the Nautilus, helmed by the infamous Captain Nemo, he sets off on a fantastical aquatic action adventure. Brought to stunning life through a mix of multimedia magic, eye-popping projections and interactive technology, this time-honored tale considers humankind's place in the world and illuminates the mysteries that lie in the vast expanse of the ocean deep. This Us premiere runs September 30-October 10, 2016 at The New Victory Theater, 209 West 42nd Street.
From captivating collaborators Craig Francis of Kidoons and Rick Miller of WYRD Productions, Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea connects the classic Jules Verne adventure with contemporary environmental issues. Miller brings his multidisciplinary theatermaking to bear on Francis's penchant for activism in theater. Together, they've paired live multimedia storytelling with online education tools and partnered with leading scientists and conservation organizations to show audiences how individual actions can influence the global environment—and shape its future.
Accolades and Highlights:
•Director and performer Rick Miller has won both a Dora Award (Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role) and a Gemini Award (Best Individual or Ensemble Performance in an Animated Program or Series), Canada's versions of the Tony and Emmy.
•Projection designer Deco Dawson won the Toronto International Film Festival award for Best Canadian Short Film in 2012 for Keep a Modest Head.
•In 2015, Kidoons began a partnership with Earth Day Canada's Ecokids program with the goal of getting kids across Canada to plant 25,000 trees!
Just steps from the Times Square-42nd Street subway stops, The New Victory is a 499-seat, historic, jewel box theater restored to its original glory. The majority of our shows are presented here, in the oldest operating theater in New York City.
