The Bad Dog Theatre Company brings the high-octane action, intensity and deliciously terrible dialogue of the quintessential summer blockbuster from the silver screen to the live stage, completely unscripted. Explosions, car chases, catch phrases and slick moustaches - some of Canada’s funniest improvisers will perform genre-bending cinematic homages August 8 to 13, 2016 at the Bad Dog Comedy Theatre.
This year marks the return of the Summer Blockbuster Audience Favourite Award: a cash reward of $300 which includes a marquee run in Bad Dog Theatre’s 2017 season. Last year’s award went to Evany Rosen and Kayla Lorette for their smash hit Network Notes, which has since graced the cover of Now Magazine and become a monthly sell-out show at the theatre.
2016 Festival highlights include:”
•What happens when two different characters played by the same actor meet in the same movie? Improvised genre mash-up Arc sees the reunion of seminal Regina improv troupe the General Fools including Mike Fly (editor - Baroness Von Sketch Show), Michal Grajewski (Rick Mercer Report) Jayden Pfeifer (Red Hot Riot) & recent Dora Award winner Amy Matysio.
•Fringe darlings Sex T-Rex, grace the stage after their hit show Wasteland. Capturing all the excitement of a big screen blockbuster they present breathtaking action, bone-crunching fight scenes, and heartbreaking drama, entirely improvised by cast members Conor Bradbury, Kaitlin Morrow, Julian Frid, Josef Addleman and Seann Murray.
•Throne of Games, a live, unscripted, award-nominated interpretation of George R.R. Martin’s bestselling medieval fantasy series - Game of Thrones - returns for one night only in an epic sequel episode to its multiple smash-hit runs at Comedy Bar & the 2013 Next Stage Festival, directed by Colin Munch (Bright Lights, True Blue)
•Alice Moran’s (Sunnyside) Law &/or Order crosses the Atlantic & dons a fancy wig as last year’s sold out parody show gets the British treatment. Featuring Bad Dog veterans Alistair Forbes, Rob Baker, Jess Bryson & more!
•Newly-minted Second City Mainstage alumn, Kirsten Rasmussen, directs Real Live Toronto Girls, a realistic dram-edy about the ups-and-downs of four twenty-something women living in Toronto
•PLUS a special Blockbuster edition of Bad Dog’s weekly in-house show Theatresports which featuring the city’s top improvisers in a battle for the audience’s laughter
