Composed of memories, explanations, and stories from friends and family, Shea and Nora reenact fantasy filled representations of what it’s like to have grown up with a morbid, abnormal, and persistent fear of your own mortality. MorbidAbnormalMe is a playful and honest examination of Shea’s
real life fears and anxieties and an attempt at tracing their origins. It’s a show about friendship, managing mental health and, above all, learning to laugh at yourself.
The show premiered at The Brighton Fringe following development in Toronto with Humber College’s Theatre Performance School. It went on to perform at Stories of Being (London, UK), an arts festival focusing on mental health and wellness and will be performed at Bestival on The Isle of Wight this September.
Theatremaker and Figgy Figs co-founder Shea Wojtus said: “I wanted to make a show about living with anxiety because I think it’s important to examine the lightness that can be found in the darker bits of life. The show has given me an opportunity to delve into a world of fear without being fearful. I wanted to create
a piece of work that gave me the freedom to explore the ridiculousness of some of my anxieties and to realize that there is so much life that can be born out of a fear of death.”
The Figgy Figs are Canadian theatre duo Shea Wojtus and Nora Smith, splitting their time between London, UK and Toronto, Ontario. The pair work with an emphasis on lightness, game, and image. They graduated from Ecole Philippe Gaulier in 2015 and MorbidAbnormalMe is their debut show and a North
American premiere.
