Theatre Fix is proud to present the critically acclaimed Canadian premiere production, returning to Toronto for a limited engagement after its successful run at the 2014 SummerWorks Performance Festival.
Five migrants from Somalia, Afghanistan and Turkey have paid an Agent to smuggle them across Europe and into England. What price will they pay to complete their journey? Inside a 20-foot shipping container parked behind The Berkeley Street Theatre, Theatre Fix invites Toronto audiences to experience the claustrophobic, dark, and cramped conditions these refugees
THE CONTAINER brings audiences closer than any camera to the human stories behind the statistics of the global refugee crisis. Dramatizing the final hours of these migrants’ journey, the play is a deeply theatrical and nuanced exploration of the impossible choices, high stakes, and desperate hope for a better life that fuel international migrant smuggling networks around the world.
Clare Bayley’s provocative, unflinching, and empathetic play won the Amnesty International Freedom of Expression Award. Theatre Fix is proud to welcome Amnesty International Canada as its community partner in remounting this Canadian premiere production.
Under the direction of Zachary Florence (Little Death, RISER Project/The Theatre Centre; Gwen Powers, WORKhouse Theatre), this all-star cast includes Bola Aiyeola (‘da Kink in My Hair, Global; Death and the King’s Horseman, Royal Exchange UK), Lara Arabian (Blood Wedding, Modern Times/Aluna Theatre; Little Mosque on the Prairie, CBC), Victor Ertmanis (The Little Years, Stratford Festival/Tarragon Theatre; 8 seasons with the Stratford Festival), Constantine Karzis (Eyewitness, NBC Universal; Orphan Black, Space Channel), Adriano Sobretodo Jr. (Brave New World, Litmus Theatre; The Strain, FX) and introducing Ubah Guled, making her professional debut.
Set and lighting design by Dora Award-winner Jennifer Lennon (Bombay Black, Factory Theatre; The Twelve Pound Look, Shaw Festival). Sound design by Nick Carney (Spoon, Toronto Fringe Festival; Stumble, Top and Stand, Buddies/Queer Pride 2014). Costume design by Erin Gerofsky (The Speedy, Unspun Theatre/World Stage; Rifles, Praxis Theatre/Next Stage Theatre Festival). Stage managed by Marie-Claude Valiquet (Apocalypsis, Luminato Festival; Arcadia, Shaw Festival/Mirvish Productions).
