Indie unites in the Storefront’s exciting East meets West collaboration with Vancouver’s Blood Pact Theatre. The world premiere of Kill Your Parents in Viking, Alberta, directed by Rachel Cairns, (performance: THE SUMMONED/Tarragon Theatre, CYMBELINE/Bard on the Beach) marks Blood Pact’s first Toronto based production. The creative team behind the company’s previous smash hit “Piranha Club” teams up with some of Toronto’s hottest indie actors to give you a taste of transcontinental theatrical ferocity.
Set in the title’s tiny gothic town of 4000, the three Turtle siblings meet in the middle of a brutal snowstorm in order to sign the will of their recently deceased grandmother. Susan, Allie Dunbar (FRACTURING/Off Broadway, FOOTSTEPS/Noam Kroll), the eldest of the clan, hosts her two younger siblings who have both made the journey from their hometown of Vancouver. Perry, Libby Osler (PIRANHA CLUB/Blood Pact Theatre, HAMLET/BlackSpear Productions/Renegade Theatre) freshly dumped, and Frank, Mike
Eisner (Gemini Award Nominee – “Best Lead Actor” THE ENGLISHMAN’S BOY/CBC, CFC Graduate) recently released from prison, are met with an onslaught of compulsory nostalgia as Susan evades signing the will in the hopes of elongating the family reunion. When Susan’s husband Paul, Jimi Shlag (DEN OF THIEVES/Unit 102 Theatre, FLATLINERS/Columbia Pictures) arrives with a Greek feast, the evening takes an interesting turn. A failed attempt at dinnertime civility turns into a code red domestic exposing the Turtle’s dark family history.
With the formerly fashionable Canadian kitchen sink drama burned into the heads of generations of new playwrights, Charlie Kerr (Lead singer of JPNSGRLS, Light Organ Records) and Bryce Hodgson (Drama Desk nominee and longtime Godlight theatre company member) sear through the classic genre with an
explosive millennial twist. A dark comedy examining the binding ties of family in spite of conflicting views on everything from child rearing to homosexuality to Insane Clown Posse.
An exciting cross country partnership, Kill Your Parents in Viking, Alberta, promises to give Toronto a taste of how Indie is done on Canada’s West Coast.
