The Bloor St. Culture Corridor, Toronto's most diverse arts and culture district, celebrates Culture Days, the annual weekend when people across the country enjoy and participate in free arts and culture, with a special Bloor St. Culture Corridor hub of Culture Days Friday, September 30 through Sunday, October 2, 2016.
The weekend kicks off with the third installment of Hot Docs Ted Rogers Cinema and Bloor St. Culture Corridor's Culture Workers Unwind series, a professional development and networking event for workers in the arts, culture and non-profit sector, on Friday, September 30 at 4pm. Guest speakers include moderator Brett Hendrie, Executive Director, Hot Docs; along with panelists Sara Diamond, President, OCAD University; Adrian Fung, Vice President of Innovation, Toronto Symphony Orchestra; and Ravi Jain, Associate Artistic Director, Soulpepper Theatre Company. Free admission.
As part of the Bloor St. Culture Corridor Hub of Culture Days, The Royal Conservatory presents three free concert events. Gábor Takács-Nagy conducts the Royal Conservatory Orchestra with pianist Rossina Grieco perform in Koerner Hall on Friday, September 30, at 8pm. The wildly popular Koerner Hall Free For All returns on October 1, with aspiring and professional musicians enjoying their five minutes of glory on the Koerner Hall stage. Acoustic performances are between 12 noon and 3pm and amplified performances from 5pm to 8pm. For those unable to come in person, the Koerner Hall Free For All will be available on the "Live at Koerner Hall" Livestream, at www.rcmusic.ca/livestream. On October 2, at 2pm, the new free Sunday Interludes concert series starts with 2016 Juno Award-winning saxophonist, composer, and arranger, Allison Au, and her quartet performing in Mazzoleni Concert Hall. Tickets are free.
The Talisker Players join the Gardiner Museum on Saturday, October 1, to celebrate Culture Days with Puttin' on the Ritz: Selections from the Irving Berlin Songbook featuring the music of one of the greatest songwriters in history, amongst one of the most important collections of ceramics from across time and around the world. The Talisker Players and guest artist, mezzo soprano Whitney O'Hearn, sample some of the favourites, including 'Always', 'Cheek to Cheek' - and of course, the title song. Free admission.
The Gardiner Museum is also a site of free art events and exhibitions that are also part of Nuit Blanche, including Bleue et Blanche, pottery from the ancient Americas and cutting-edge contemporary works; URBAN SYNCOPATION, and installation by Mona El Khafif , Ila Berman , Marcella Del Signore , Steven Beites that temporarily cloaks urban surfaces with a patterned, responsive and performative skin that functions as a dynamic interface; and Korsi, Maziar Ghaderi's intimate and interactive installation of a low table found in rural Iran decorated with donated blankets and arranged with heaters underneath it.
Also as part of Nuit Blanche, the courtyard in front of The Royal Conservatory is the site of art installations from 7pm Saturday night until 7am Sunday morning, including Bike Date / Rest Stop Bike Repair Shop with Laura Curry; The Firefly Effect, Jody Naderi and John Fillwalk's multi-media art event accessed through a mobile app, and Weight, Rosary Solimanto's endurance performance involving 20lb steel boots.
At the Bata Shoe Museum people can experience Nuit Blanche exhibitions and the Bloor St. Culture Corridor hub of Culture Days, with Salute the 6ix ~ Piece by Piece where everyone can show our pride for Toronto and be part of a unique puzzle sculpture that captures what we love about this city, Melting by Evan Steingarten and Jason van Horne, featuring photographs of glacier ice displayed on sculpted pedestals and frames formed from manufactured ice with internal lights they become beacons slowly melting throughout the night and Cushion by F_Rmlab, featuring dozens of colourful inflatable masses lit from within which will lead visitors to enter the museum through the 'back door'. Free admission.
The Gardiner Museum is free all weekend and features Family Sunday activities, including clay workshops and tile painting, on Sunday, October 2, 11am - 4pm.
Alliance française presents a screening of Le Petit Prince, the animated movie by Mark Osborne, on Sunday, October 2, 2016 at 2pm. Free admission.
Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra will present solo violin music at the Bata Shoe Museum on Sunday, October 2 at 3pm. Violinist Patricia Ahern will present a one-hour program, performing music by Telemann, Biber, and Bach, all while giving context to the audience about this beautiful music. Admittance to this event and to the entire Bata Shoe Museum is free all day Sunday.
The Museum of Estonians Abroad (VEMU) presents the exhibition Free Lines. Portraits from the Restored Republic of Estonia by Andrus Peegel, on view Friday, September 30, 10am-5pm. The exhibition celebrates 25 years since the restoration of the independence of Estonia. Free admission.
Also happening that weekend, the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) will present #FNLROM: Nuit ROM on Friday, September 30, Wildzone Workshops on Saturday October 1, and Meet the ROM's Aquarium Keeperon Sunday October 2. These events are free with the purchase of general admission.
