MOUTHPIECE
Created and Performed by Norah Sadava & Amy Nostbakken
Directed and Composed by Amy Nostbakken
A Nightwood Theatre presentation of a Quote Unquote Collective production
October 21-November 6
Opening night, October 21
Presented in rep with Quiver
A harrowing, humorous and heart-wrenching journey into the female psyche. In the wake of her mother’s death, Mouthpiece follows one woman, for one day, as she tries to find her voice. Interweaving a cappella harmonies, dissonance, text and physicality, two performers express the inner conflict that exists within a modern woman’s head: the push and the pull, the past and the present, the progress and the regression.
After its sold-out run in Toronto in 2015, and garnering six Dora Award nominations, and two wins, Nightwood is proud to bring this powerful show back to the stage.
ABOUT QUOTE UNQUOTE COLLECTIVE
Quote Unquote Collective is a Toronto-based, multi-disciplinary performance company that aims to work outside the boundaries of tradition and expectation. Engaging with urgent social and political themes, the company is founded on the firm belief that art and performance are tools to provoke conversation and change. Co-founders Amy Nostbakken and Norah Sadava, who both have a strong background in physical theatre and music, have joined forces to produce work in a variety of genres and disciplines as a means to make new, experimental, and provocative performance work that ignites conversation within the community and the world at large. Defying conventions of style and form, the collective is built on the idea that individual ideas demand to be expressed through different forms, and should be expressed by whatever means necessary.
QUIVER
Written and Performed by Anna Chatterton
Directed by Andrea Donaldson
Presented by Nightwood Theatre
October 21-November 6
Opening night, October 21
Presented in rep with Mouthpiece
A single mother and a rebellious teenage daughter collide when a love interest comes between them, leaving 14-year-old Maddie caught in the crossfire. Armed with little more than a microphone, laptop and vocal processor, writer-performer Anna Chatterton crafts and controls a sonic landscape in a masterful performance. Called a “brilliant and brave play” by legendary Canadian playwright Judith Thompson, Quiver is a dark, delicious comedy about a passionate and imperfect family.
Based on true events in the artist’s life, QUIVER marks Chatterton’s fourth Toronto premiere this year.
ABOUT ANNA CHATTERTON
Anna Chatterton is a playwright, librettist and performer. Along with premiering Quiver this October, Chatterton’s premiered three other works this year: Within the Glass, produced by Tarragon Theatre; Gertrude and Alice, produced by Buddies in Bad Times Theatre (Dora award-nominated for Best New Play and Best Ensemble); and Rocking Horse Winner produced by Tapestry Opera. Anna co-writes and performs with the acclaimed theatre collective Independent Aunties with Evalyn Parry and Karin Randoja (Gertrude and Alice, Breakfast, Clean Irene & Dirty Maxine, Frances, Mathilda and Tea, The Mysterious Shorts).
Kelly Thornton, Artistic Director of Nightwood Theatre says, "The artistry behind Mouthpiece and Quiver represent the best in contemporary and experimental theatre today. While Mouthpiece astonishes with intricate physical and vocal scoring, Quiver takes technology and turns a traditional multi-character story into a reimagined, manipulated performance. These artists not only push the boundaries of theatre, their voices are potent reminders of what it means to be a woman today. It’s brave, fearless, and gripping work!"
PERFORMANCE SCHEDULE: Shows run in rep Tuesday – Saturday 7pm and 8:30pm; Sunday 2pm and 3:30pm. Check nightwoodtheatre.net for performance schedule. There will be a special matinee performance of just Mouthpiece on Wednesday, October 26 at 1:30pm and no evening show that day.
Tickets range from $20 to $35 and are available in person at the Buddies in Bad Times Theatre box office, 12 Alexander Street, 416-975-8555, or at nightwoodtheatre.net or buddiesinbadtimes.com
