To honour the great playwright Edward Albee, the lights of the Ed Mirvish Theatre will be dimmed on Tuesday, September 20 at 8 PM.
Mr. Albee died at the age of 88 on Friday, September 16 at his home in Montauk, N.Y. The winner of three Pulitzer Prizes and two Tony Awards, he is widely considered the greatest American dramatist of his generation and one of the greatest in the world of the 20th century.
Two of Mr. Albee’s major plays — WHO’S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF and THREE TALL WOMEN, the first being his breakout masterpiece and the latter his late-life return to mainstream prominence — had their Canadian premieres at the Royal Alexandra Theatre in Toronto. Mr. Albee was on hand in Toronto for both occasions.
Says David Mirvish: “Edward Albee was a giant in the theatre and in the artistic world in general. His unique style and point of view, his themes and obsessions created works that were unmistakably his own. He was concerned not only of social issues but existential ones as well, always unafraid to explore taboos and to bring to the surface ideas and emotions that had long been suppressed by mainstream society. It was our pleasure to have his work on our stage.
"So in the great traditional of the theatre, we will mark his brilliant life with the dimming of the marquee lights. Indeed, the theatre is a little less bright because of his passing.”
