When playwright Colleen Osborn was a messed-up sixteen year old, her mother told her “not to settle” in life. Those were some of the final words they exchanged. After finishing school and working crap jobs to make ends meet, she drove two hours back to her hometown to visit her mother’s grave and sat there asking, “Now what?” She imagined it would be great if her mother could somehow respond.
Fast-forward a few years, and we invite you to join us for the world premier of Osborn’s newest play: Bonds Beyond. This dystopian play is set at Pinnacle Corporation, where the dead don't die and the bereaved don't grieve –instead, they aspire to invest in a beta version of a digital afterlife called SummitTM where “Your consciousness is a precious commodity.” Tom is the son of the first person to beat death through Summit™; he wants to break free from living in his mother's shadow. But what options does he have other than spiritual entitlement?
Paying homage to the future imagined in the 1980’s and 90’s, director Dorcas Chiu plays with the concept of transformations to create a deeply uncanny world. Exploring themes of technology, love, family, an d death, Bonds Beyond uses visual effects to create a world that is familiar, yet also deeply different from the one we know. Created especially for the site at Array Space using projections, video, and sou nd effects, Bonds Beyond encourages audiences to examine the ways we truly connect with others and ourselves.
Warning: this play contains sexual awkwardness, quasi-death and MDMA
