A quartet of leading Canadian opera singers breathes new life into icons of British theatre – the witty, touching, perceptive, and tunefully memorable songs of Sir Noël Coward.
Mooredale Concerts presents A Talent to Amuse: The Words and Music of Noël Coward, a special cabaret-style concert featuring soprano Monica Whicher, mezzo Norine Burgess, tenor Benjamin Butterfield, and baritone Alexander Dobson, Sunday, November 6, 3:15 p.m. at Walter Hall, 80 Queen’s Park Crescent (Museum subway).
Joining the singers are the arranger and pianist, John Greer, along with violinist Barry Shiffman and cellist Adrian Fung – as “The Palm Court Trio”.
Tickets are $40; $20 for under-30s, available on line from www.mooredaleconcerts.com or by calling 416-922-3714 ext. 103.
In a salute to one of the great names of 20th century theatrical music, the artists perform such memorable numbers as I'll See You Again, I'll Follow My Secret Heart, Some Day I’ll Find You, If Love Were All, Why Do the Wrong People Travel?, and Mad Dogs and Englishmen – as solos, duets and ensemble numbers. The Palm Court Trio will also serve up some instrumental delights.
The concert title takes its name from Sheridan Morley’s beloved biography of Coward, A Talent to Amuse. It was also the title of a special stage show that celebrated Coward’s 70th birthday in 1969, with performances by 120 singers, actors and instrumentalists, among them some of the greatest names in show business. (Details are at http://www.noelcoward.net/html/talent.html.)
