Albert Schultz, Founding Artistic Director of Soulpepper Theatre Company, today announced casting details for its January and February programming, and touring details for Soulpepper productions in 2017.
Soulpepper’s 2017 programming begins with The Last Wife from Canadian playwright and artist Kate Hennig. Originally produced by the Stratford Festival, the original cast returns including Maev Beaty and Soulpepper Founding Member Joseph Ziegler, directed by Soulpepper Associate Artistic Director Alan Dilworth. The Last Wife was extended at Stratford and enjoyed a sold-out run. This marks the Toronto premiere for the piece, for a limited three-week run, and must close February 11.
February and March mark the return of Soulpepper Signature productions of Kim’s Convenience by Ins Choi directed by Weyni Mengesha, and Of Human Bondage adapted by Vern Thiessen directed by Albert Schultz.
Kim’s Convenience and Of Human Bondage also head Off-Broadway this July for the company’s month-long Festival, Soulpepper on 42nd Street, at The Pershing Square Signature Center alongside Soulpepper productions of Spoon River, Alligator Pie, Cage, (re)Birth: E. E. Cummings in Song and more. Soulpepper’s NY programming will run concurrently to Canada 150 programming at home in Toronto with four Canadian productions, including: Billy Bishop Goes to War created and performed by John MacLachlan Gray and Eric Peterson; Vimy by Vern Thiessen; and the Confederation plays from Toronto’s innovative VideoCabaret, Confederation & Riel and Scandal & Rebellion.
The CBC-TV production of Kim’s Convenience, produced by Thunderbird and Soulpepper and featuring stage-star Paul Sun-Hyung Lee, recently wrapped on its successful first season with an average of 933,000 viewers an episode, with season two announced and in pre-production.
In 2017 Kim’s Convenience also tours to Neptune Theatre in Halifax, NS from January 10 to February 5 and the Segal Centre for Performing Arts in Montreal, QC from March 8 to 19, led by Lee from the television series.

The Last Wife

Sex, violence and women’s rights shape a humorous and powerful contemporary take on the tumultuous relationship that sculpted a dynasty. Originally produced by the Stratford Festival, the original cast returns: Maev Beaty; Sara Farb; Jonah Q. Gribble; Gareth Potter; Bahia Watson; and Soulpepper Founding Member Joseph Ziegler. The Last Wife was originally produced by the Stratford Festival.

Kim’s Convenience

Soulpepper Academy alumnus Ins Choi’s hilarious and touching story set in a Regent Park Korean convenience store has been winning over audiences from coast to coast both on the stage, and as inspiration for the CBC’s newest hit TV show of the same name. The journey of a fractured but loving family confronting the future and forgiving the past is a Toronto classic in the making. The cast: Paul Sun-Hyung Lee; Richard Lee; Ronnie Rowe Jr.; Rosie Simon; and Jean Yoon.

In celebration of Soulpepper’s 20th anniversary in 2017, and Canada’s sesquicentennial, Soulpepper will embark on a month of programming Off-Broadway in New York City in July, 2017 at the Frank Gehry-designed Pershing Square Signature Center. Confirmed programming includes productions of Kim’s Convenience, Of Human Bondage, Spoon River, Alligator Pie, (re)Birth: E. E. Cummings in Song; Cage; A Brimful of Asha; and more.
