Crow’s Theatre is proud to present Breath In Between as the third show in their 2017 winter/spring inaugural season in their new home, the Streetcar Crowsnest. Written by multi-Dora Award-winning playwright, librettist, and novelist Anton Piatigorsky, this production of Breath In Between – which originally premiered at Summerworks 2012 – will also be the author’s directorial debut.
A surreal love story about Roger, the murderer of two willing victims who respond to his ad on a webpage, and Amy, a woman he meets soon afterwards in a bar. Breath In Between is a highly theatrical, mysterious meditation on radical intimacy, on the bliss of connection and the agony of isolation, on the ways in which people possess each other and struggle to bridge the gaps between them.
Piatigorsky will direct a re-worked script that puts focus on examining human bonds in the age of the internet. Says Piatigorsky, “Breath In Between is now fundamentally about self-discovery in intimacy; bodies existing in the same room, an intimacy that cannot be separated by time or space - and about the cultural, psychological and spiritual/existential barriers to connection.”
Speaking to the process of directing his own writing for the first time, Piatigorsky adds, “I’m thrilled to be directing my own material, and nothing but excited by the prospect of directing for the first time. As a director I am actively questioning and pressing the material as if it were written by someone else to find the story; as the playwright, I respond those questions and pressure by adjusting the material and trying to make it better. It’s a very fulfilling process.”
Crow’s Artistic Director Chris Abraham and Piatigorsky’s collaborations date back almost 20 years including their seminal production of Eternal Hydra, and Abraham jumped at the opportunity to have Piatigorsky be a part of the first season in the new venue.
Comments Abraham, “Anton is one of my oldest friends and he has been one of the most important creative collaborators of my career. Naturally I wanted him to be a part of this first year in our new theatre. I am an enormous fan of his theatrical imagination and deep intelligence and am truly excited to see what he brings as a director to this strange and compelling piece of writing. The re-writing of human relationships as they are affected by the disconnection, and yet myriad possibilities of technology, is one of the key themes of our times - Breath In Between offers a fascinating look at these issues.”
This new production stars Kyle Gatehouse (The Plateaus, SideMart Theatrical Grocery company member) and Julia Krauss (Orpheus and Eurydice).
Piatigorsky and the cast are joined by set and costume designer Shannon Lea Doyle, sound designer Richard Feren, and lighting designer Kaileigh Krysztofiak.
Breath In Between will run February 18 – March 11 (Media night: February 23) at the Streetcar Crowsnest (345 Carlaw Avenue) in the Scotiabank Community Studio. Shows are scheduled Monday through Saturday at 8:30 p.m. and Saturday matinees at 2:30 p.m.
Tickets are now available for Crow’s 2017 season with regular tickets starting at $20 and Frequent Flyer Passes starting at $120. Get online information and make ticket purchases at crowstheatre.com.
