ROMANCE ON A DESERTED ISLE!!
Haydn’s Opera The Deserted Island makes its Toronto Debut on Sunday, February 5
Fair maidens in distress, pirates and miraculous rescues have caught the imagination of the public and creative artists for centuries. Robinson Crusoe, The Tempest, and Castaway are three of the most famous tales of men who find themselves in peril on a lonely island. Of course, Daniel Defoe, Shakespeare, and Tom Hanks all had different ways of dealing with the situation. Haydn, following the lead of his librettist, has two sisters abandoned on an island, though both are still in remarkably good health…even after 13 years. Men arrive, love blooms, conflict is resolved and two couples are united by the final curtain.
