The Yellow Door Theatre Project is preparing to unleash a wide range of new programming to the community in its space at the Redekopp Creative and Performing Arts Centre.
The not-for-profit musical theatre school has announced its January classes in arts training and has scheduled an open house event on Saturday, Jan. 7 to showcase the facility, located at 504 Line 2 in Virgil, along with some of its programming. Andorlie Hillstrom, artistic director at Yellow Door Theatre, says the day will feature free programming that the community can come and participate in on a drop-in basis.
“We want the community to come out and see what we have to offer,” said Hillstrom. “It’s an opportunity to try a whole range of things for free.”
With the space at the Redekopp Creative and Performing Arts Centre, Hillstrom said they’ve been able to expand the programming to meet the requests and demand from the Yellow Door Theatre families and the community at large. Starting this month programs will be offered to students of all ages in theatre, music, dance and writing.
“These classes give young people — and people young at heart — the opportunity to play, learn and grow through arts education,” said Hillstrom.
Some of the new programming being offered includes classes for younger artists, including Kindermusik, Imagine That, Tunes4Tots, and Beginner Movement, where toddlers and preschoolers can discover the joy of movement and gain coordination skills and confidence in a fun, relaxed environment.
Older children and young adults can participate in a variety of programming, including Musical Theatre, Beginner Elements of Dance, Drama Class, Creative Drama Ensemble, and a new program, Junior Creative Writers. Led by instructor Catherine Skinner, the class will explore the elements of creative writing with a focus on freeing the writer’s voice and channeling creativity.
Yellow Door Theatre Projects is also introducing a new class for adults, Acting For Life. Instructor Barbara Worthy will demonstrate how the universal language of drama provides participants with tools to improve business and social skills,
build self-esteem and confidence, and develop empowerment strategies in a fun, low-stress environment.
“We’re excited about the whole range of programs,” said Hillstrom. “It’s all about opening the door of creative and performing arts to the community.”
All of the classes take place in the newly renovated Redekopp Creative and
Performing Arts Centre. A complete list of classes and registration information is available online at yellowdoortheatre.com.
The open house on Saturday will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and will feature free sample classes in some of the most popular programming, including Kindermusik, Tunes4Tots, and Beginner Movement for younger children and Junior Creative Writing, Musical Theatre, Beginner Dance, Drama Classes and more for older children. There will also be a free mat pilates class presented by Live Breathe Pilates for adults. Bring your own yoga and pilates mat with you. Complete details on the class times and ages is available on the Yellow Door website.
Hillstrom said she is looking forward to welcoming new community members through the doors of the Redekopp Creative and Performing Arts Centre. With the first full year of programming commencing at the site, she said she is excited to show off the space not only for Yellow Door Theatre programs, but to also seek individuals interested in renting space for other programming.
