Seven Siblings Theatre is thrilled to announce the first ever Future Theatre Festival, running October 19-29. Mandated to produce Fantastic Realism, theatre that is rooted in our recognized world while being heightened, this festival of new works seeks to stimulate, provoke and engage its audience.
Each of these three plays has been in development since May 2017. The artistic team of Seven Siblings Theatre and guest artists met monthly with the participating playwrights, directors and actors, leading them in writing, dramaturgy, atmosphere, character development and building a play to create full-length plays. Utilizing the Michael Chekhov technique was an integral part of these development sessions, as Seven Siblings uses this technique to explore and deepen the experience of developing theatrical work. Diverse in narratives and format, each of these plays has been developed to further create the Theatre of the Future.
“This festival is here to support emerging voices in Canadian Theatre, and foster the development of Fantastic Realism on a larger scale. We are ecstatic about the wide range and vibrant worlds of our participants, and we hope to shake up the theatre scene with our exciting programming this fall.” – Will King
Our Plays:
New World
By Genevieve Adam
Presented by Favour the Brave (Deceitful Above All Things, Summerworks 2016, NOW Magazine Outstanding New Play, Outstanding Production)
New World tells two parallel stories simultaneously: of a father in 17th century London preparing to sail to North America, and of a 21st century daughter departing to colonize Mars. Each character faces the opposition of their respective child/parent. Each of them believes their society is broken and must be abandoned. Each of them is running from their pasts toward a new world.
Directed by Tayna Rintoul
Featuring: Darcy Gerhart and David Straus
Tactile Maladies
By Nawi Moreno-Valverde
Presented by All These Cures (Winner Best Playwright, Best Performer, Hart House Drama Festival, Salt Water Forest, Joanna Decc)
A historian invites us into a quarantined home during a plague. The group of women that make up the household all attempt to use the quarantine to their advantage: maintain power over the family barber surgeon shop via cross dressing and (early) modern science; hide a pregnancy; seduce the favourite cousin. Any character that offers to make clarity of the chaos will be killed, exiled, or will leave us without any answers.
Directed by Nawi Moreno-Valverde
Assistant Directed by Melissa Anne Fearon
Produced by Kevin Matthew Wong
Stage Managed by Lily Chan
Lighting Designed by Micah Champagne
Set and Costume Designed by Elizabeth Traicus

Presented by Halfway Home Collective (Winner Best Production, On the Edge Fringe Festival)
Leah is being haunted by the ghost of her dead husband. Mark never leaves her as she wrestles with her guilt, her sanity, and her hatred of a painting he left on their wall. Dark, tumultuous and avante-garde, “this place.” is an exploration of loss and conscience.
Featuring: Becky Tanton and Scott Marleau
