We celebrate Culture Days, the annual weekend when people enjoy free arts and culture, with a special Bloor St. Culture Corridor hub of Culture Days events. The Gardiner Museum will be offering free admission all weekend.
On Saturday, September 30, Alliance Française presents an exhibition about The Allied Landing in Provence in 1944, The Royal Conservatory presents a free talk "Jazz Meets Classical" with Mark Micklethwaite at 5pm, and the Bata Shoe Museum will be open for free 7pm-7am, with three special art installations and all of the Bata Shoe Museum galleries as part of Culture Days and Nuit Blanche.
On Sunday, October 1, The Royal Conservatory presents a free concert by Ensemble Made in Canada with Scott St. John at Mazzoleni Concert Hall at 2pm, the Bata Shoe Museum is offering free admission all day and presenting a classical music performance by Clara Lee at 3pm, and then 4pm-5pm, the University of Toronto Faculty of Music's Bass Day includes a world record attempt for the most bassists ever to play "The Elephant" from Carnival of the Animals by Saint-Saëns and a fun Bass Petting Zoo for the whole family to enjoy the amazing instrument.

Museum of Estonians Abroad/VEMU
In October at the Museum of Estonians Abroad, the exhibition Building a Community: Estonian Architects in Post-War Toronto is on display until February 2018. On October 1, the Estonian Ecumenical Relief Organization, ESC/VEMU, and Estonian Fashion Brands Association present Northern Spirit: Estonian Fashion and Design Experience, a fundraising fashion event at Tartu College. The two fashion shows are at 2pm and 7pm. Tickets: $40/$20 (students). On Sunday, October 22 at 2pm, the new Professor of the Elmar Tampõld Chair of Estonian Studies at the University of Toronto, Dr. Andres Kasekamp, will be giving a lecture on the topic of How Estonia Leads Europe, the Opportunities and Challenges of the Presidency of the Council of the European Union. In Estonian. On Friday, October 27, 7pm at Tartu College, the Estonian girls choir Elis from Pärnu will be performing a concert. Admission by donation to assist the young musicians. 918 Bathurst Centre for Culture, Arts, Media and Education is pleased to partner with Studio 180 Theatre to present a series of theatre workshops, continuing until October 5. Miles Nadal Jewish Community Centre
On October 1, join the free Spadina Synagogue Walking Tour that departs from the Miles Nadal JCC, or bring the family to the Splash N'Boots Big Yellow Tunes Tour in the Al Green Theatre. Textile artist Sharon Epstein displays Jewish Chuppahs or "canopies" in the gallery exhibition, Blessings. Don't miss a darkly comic Israeli drama presented by the Toronto Jewish Film Society on the big screen of the Al Green Theatre: The Human Resources Manager, introduced by Adam Nayman, October 15. The daytime adult cultural talks include a three-part art lecture series: Modigliani Unmasked with Osnat Lipa beginning October 16, Jewish Folk Tales That Have Become Operas with Dr. Joseph Gilbert on October 19, and Honouring the Past, Imaging the Future: The Legacy of Honest Ed with Bill Gladstone on October 26. University of Toronto Faculty of Music
Chamber music takes centre stage as the University of Toronto Faculty of Music presents three stellar concerts. Beginning October 2, Steinway concert artist Enrico Elisi's From Public Stage to Private Parlour: An Introduction to Rarely Performed Piano Works from Rossini's Years of Silence. On October 5, the New Orford String Quartet performs Gellman, Ravel and Tchaikovsky, and on October 30 the Toronto Symphony's Joseph Johnson and the Gryphon Trio's James Parker team up for an unforgettable evening. The Thursdays at Noon free concert series continues with the Toronto Symphony's Jonathan Crow and Joseph Johnson October 19, and Musical Chairs II featuring Elizabeth McDonald, Giles Tomkins, Achilles Liarmakopoulos, and Kathryn Tremills October 26. The Faculty hosts special presentations by mezzo-soprano Judith Forst October 16, and composer Imant Raminsh October 18. Soundstreams
Soundstreams' 35th season opens with a celebration of kindred northern identities. The Lapland Chamber Orchestra performs music by iconic composers from Canada and Finland, past and present, including Jean Sibelius, Harry Somers, and Claude Vivier. Doubly marking Canada's sesquicentennial and Finland at 100, this program by Europe's northernmost professional orchestra includes dance by powerhouse choreographer Michael Greyeyes, the world premiere of Soundstreams' 35th Anniversary Fanfare by Canadian Anna Pidgorna, and gems by Stravinsky and Debussy. Gardiner Museum
October brings an exciting new range of programming at the Gardiner Museum, including the 25th anniversary of our Empty Bowls fundraiser and the opening of a landmark retrospective of acclaimed Canadian artist Steven Heinemann. On Thursday, October 12, celebrate 25 years of Empty Bowls at the Gardiner. Sample delicious soup by some of the city's top chefs and choose a ceramic bowl to take home with you, all in support of Anishnawbe Health Toronto's work to aid the homeless. Opening on Thursday, October 19, the Gardiner Museum presents Steven Heinemann: Culture and Nature, a retrospective highlighting Heinemann's fascinating thirty-five year career and featuring more than 70 objects, including new work. Take part in an intimate discussion with the artist, Gardiner Museum Executive Director & CEO Kelvin Browne, and curator Rachel Gotlieb on Tuesday, October 17 to gain insight into Heinemann's artistic practice. Tafelmusik
Take a Grand Tour across baroque Italy with Tafelmusik's new Music Director Elisa Citterio, as she leads you through the sights, sounds, and tastes of her home country in Elisa's Italian Adventure, October 11-15 at Jeanne Lamon Hall, Trinity-St. Paul's Centre. From Vivaldi's Autumn to Fontana's sonatas (written in Elisa's hometown, Brescia), Steffani's dramatic suites to Locatelli's energetic concertos, the innovations and passions of Italy's musicians are all to be found here. On October 5 at Trinity-St. Paul's Centre, delve a little deeper into baroque music with The Listening Club - like a book club, but for music! The Royal Conservatory of Music
As The Royal Conservatory of Music's 2017.18 concert season begins, the Miles Electric Band comes to Koerner Hall on October 14. On October 21, Flamenco Legends by Javier Limón: The Paco de Lucía Project reassembles original band members that toured with the legendary flamenco guitarist for the last 10 years of his career. In a related event, the documentary film, Flight of the Guitar: Dreaming of Paco de Lucía, will be screened at the Hot Docs Ted Rogers Cinema on October 24, 6:30pm. Another hot concert at Koerner Hall celebrates the 50th anniversary of renowned Chilean band Inti-Illimani, sharing the evening of October 27 with Chilean singer-songwriter, poet, and multi-instrumentalist, Nano Stern. Hot Docs Ted Rogers Cinema
Podcast fever takes to the stage with the highly anticipated Hot Docs Podcast Festival featuring Intercepted with Naomi Klein, Desmond Cole and Narcy, The Nod with guests Sarah Hagi and Vicky Mochama, Another Round, Canadaland with guest Daniel Dale, Washington correspondent for the Toronto Star, and more from October 12-15. Hot Docs Ted Rogers Cinema presents a strange and surprisingly beautiful doc narrated by Willem Dafoe: Do Donkeys Act? (opens September 29). TIFF favourite Long Time Running (opens September 29) captures the magic of The Tragically Hip's final tour in the wake of lead singer Gord Downie's terminal cancer diagnosis. Japan Foundation, Toronto
The Japan Foundation, Toronto presents Eiko Ishioka Poster Exhibition, continuing through December 20. Sixty-seven posters show an array of her works from 1971-2012, which only captures a snapshot of the prolific artist's creativity. She was known as a trail blazer, and worked on a wide range of projects including the Japanese poster for the film Apocalypse Now, costume design for the Beijing Olympics and Canada's 2002 Winter Olympic Team, art direction for Shiseido, Miles Davis album cover, and a Bjork video. In North America, Ishioka is known for her Academy Award winning costume designs for such films as Bram Stoker's Dracula, The Cell, The Fall, The Immortals, and the last film she worked on, Mirror Mirror. Bata Shoe Museum
Fall programs are in full swing at the Bata Shoe Museum! On October 1, the month kicks off with a day celebrating arts and culture in Ontario. As part of Culture Days Ontario, the BSM will be offering free admission all day long, and at 3pm visitors can enjoy a free performance and Q&A with violinist Clara Lee. On October 3, bundle up your little one and enjoy a docent-led mom and baby stroller tour in the BSM galleries. Stop by the BSM on the evening of October 19, during pay-what-you-can Thursday, when the BSM is excited to host a special screening of the short film 40 Years of Goth Shoes, including a Q&A with producer Liisa Ladouceur. The Istituto Italiano di Cultura is pleased to present
With New Eyes: Architecture for Toronto by Francesco and Aldo Piccaluga Architects, an exhibition dedicated to the work of Italian-Canadian architects Francesco and Aldo Piccaluga. The exhibition will present original materials from the Piccaluga archive together with interviews and present-day photographs of the buildings. Spanning three decades, the architecture and interior design of the Piccaluga brothers played a significant role in crafting new, visionary spatial experiences as symbols of modern Toronto. The original interiors for the CN Tower exemplify the brothers' unique ability to create visually engaging spaces while also providing occupants with a feeling of comfort. This October, the Alliance Française 2017.18 season continues with the screening of Giovanna d'Arco (by P. Greenaway and S. Boddeke) on October 5. October brings an exciting lineup of programs and exhibitions at the Toronto Reference Library. The TD Gallery's Pop Sherlock exhibit spotlights Sherlock Holmes, the ultimate pop culture icon. The Library's Appel Salon will host writers, Claire Messud, Alan Doyle, Orhan Pamuk, and Jennifer Egan. The 2017 Toronto Book Awards winner will be announced October 12 at the Toronto Reference Library, this ticketed event is open to the public. On October 13 the Indigenous Writers' Gathering will celebrate excellence in Indigenous storytelling and literature featuring writers such as Maria Campbell, Louise Halfe, Tracey Lindberg and Cherie Dimaline.
