After 40 years, one of Toronto’s oldest companies specializing in Theatre for Young Audiences, Solar Stage, has found a new home at Wychwood Barns – one of the most celebrated projects by Toronto’s creative placemaking leaders, Artscape.
As part of Solar Stage’s move, the Dora Award-Nominated Creative Team – including Artistic Director Dahlia Katz, and Artistic Director M. John Kennedy - welcome the Wychwood Barns, Toronto Theatre and Artistic Community at large, to join the company as they cut the ribbon on the new space, announce the 2017-18 season and herald in a new era for family theatre in our city.
So many theatre companies in the downtown core are seeing a reduction in affordable performance and rehearsal spaces, and Solar Stage is no exception – having to move after over 30 years in their original space. Teaming with non-profit Artscape, however, will allow the company to offer a full family experience, new classes, and an accessible rental space to help Toronto’s performance scene thrive.
About Solar Stage:
Celebrating 40 years of creating award-winning family theatre for all ages in Toronto, Solar Stage is a company dedicated to being ‘part of a village that raises a child’, with an emphasis on developing community, creativity and artistic excellence through theatre that is diverse, empathetic and celebrates the spirit of play. Under the helm of our current Artistic Director and Artistic Producer, Dahlia Katz and M. John Kennedy, Solar Stage has seen 7 Dora Award nominations, and has reached a whole new generation of children with imaginative adaptations and original works, both in the company’s dedicated space and in numerous school performances across the Greater Toronto Area.
Join us Oct 12th 3-6 at 601 Christie Street Studio 176 pm for a chance to have a first look at the future of Solar Stage – it’s looking very bright indeed as we launch our Go fund me that night!
