Richard Rose, Artistic Director of Tarragon Theatre, is thrilled to welcome Marine Life to Tarragon Theatre this November. The new play by Rosa Labordé (Léo, Hush), who also directs the production, comes to Tarragon’s Extraspace in collaboration with Aluna Theatre and runs November 8 - December 17, 2017 (opening Thursday, November 16).
Save the world or save yourself? In this romantic comedy Sylvia, an ecological activist, is caught between her own environmental extremism and falling in love with an unscrupulous lawyer. When the rains come and the flood water rises, who will survive the deluge?
In the midst of ecological disaster, Sylvia and Rupert explore their budding relationship while Sylvia’s co-dependent musician brother John/Juan spirals into self-destruction and does everything he can to push them apart. Marine Life is a piece about complicated intimacies set against a backdrop of apocalyptic proportions. The play incorporates magic realism, humour and live music while exploring themes of environmentalism, creativity and the end of everything.
Marine Life asks big questions about man’s relationship to the environment; Is it because we know our time here is limited that the earth’s demise loses relevance to us? As Labordé notes, “Our ceaseless overproduction and overconsumption is clearly leading us down an unsustainable path and yet we don’t stop. This fascinates me.”
Despite this, the play has comic feel, “Rosa Labordé takes a serious topic and approaches it with a playful touch,” notes Artistic Director Richard Rose. “We’re excited to see the reaction Marine Life is sure to spark in Tarragon audiences."
Marine Life features Nicola Correia-Damude (Much Ado About Nothing, Stratford Festival; Marine Life, Criminal Theatre/Aluna Theatre), Toronto-based singer/songwriter Justin Rutledge (Out of the Woods, SummerWorks) and Matthew Edison (The Real World?, Tarragon Theatre; Venus in Fur, RMTC).
Marine Life runs from November 8 - December 17, 2017, opening officially Thursday, November 16.
