Albert Schultz, Founding Artistic Director of Soulpepper Theatre Company, today announced casting and programming updates for 2018 winter productions which include a world premiere, a Canadian premiere, a Pulitzer Prize winner for Drama, a Tony Award winner for Best Play, and two brand new concert experiences.
Soulpepper’s 2017-2018 season continues this January with Peter Shaffer’s Tony award-winning Amadeus, a sweeping and entertaining look at Mozart and Salieri, directed by Albert Schultz. It will run in rep with Soulpepper’s second Edward Albee play of the season, the Pulitzer Prize-winning A Delicate Balance directed by Soulpepper Founding Member Diana Leblanc.
In March of 2018, Soulpepper explores classic tales of power and intrigue with the Canadian Premiere of Roland Schimmelpfennig’s Idomeneus (translated by David Tushingham) directed by Alan Dilworth, and the world premiere of George Orwell’s Animal Farm adapted by Soulpepper Academy graduate Anthony MacMahon, directed by Ravi Jain, and commissioned by Soulpepper through Project imagiNation.
Soulpepper’s popular Concert Series also continues, with original, theatrical takes on two specific eras: Prohibition, the Concert and A Moveable Feast: Paris in the ‘20s. The Soulpepper Concert Series is led by Slaight Family Director of Music, Mike Ross.
Soulpepper’s 2017 programming concludes this month, with Family Festival productions of A Christmas Carol, Bad Hats Theatre’s Peter Pan, A Very Soulpepper Christmas concert, Common Boots Theatre’s The Story, holiday podcasts, free Young at Heart concerts, and a residency with the AGO. Amadeus

Genius can spring from the most unexpected of places. Newly arrived in Vienna, eccentric musical prodigy Mozart tries to secure his place at court, while jealous rivals conspire to tear him down. Featuring Frank Cox-O’Connell, Miriam Fernandes, Katherine Gauthier, Hailey Gillis, Soulpepper Founding Member Diego Matamoros, John Ng, Colin Palangio, Gregory Prest, Paolo Santalucia, Sugith Varughese, Jennifer Villaverde, Michaela Washburn, Soulpepper Founding Member William Webster, and Jeff Yung. Amadeus is designed by Lorenzo Savoini (set and video), Erika Connor (costumes), Kevin Lamotte (lighting), and James Smith (sound).
Amadeus runs from January 10 to February 10, 2018. Opening night is January 17.
A Delicate Balance

In all things – friendship, intimacy, civility – there is a balance that must be carefully maintained to avert disaster. When a daughter returns home and friends move in, Albee shows how easy it is to tip the scales. The cast features: Derek Boyes; Laura Condlln; Oliver Dennis; Kyra Harper; Soulpepper Founding Member Nancy Palk; and Brenda Robins. A Delicate Balance is designed by Astrid Janson (set), Alexandra Lord (assistant set), Patrick Clark (costumes), André du Toit (lighting), and John Gzowski (sound).

A Delicate Balance runs from January 13 to February 10, 2018. Opening night is January 18.
Idomeneus

The Trojan War is over, but for Idomeneus the greatest struggle awaits his return – a crucible of the soul. A chorus weaves fates and stories into a wrenching lyrical epic from one of Europe’s most exciting contemporary playwrights. The cast: Akosua Amo-Adem, Alana Bridgewater, Courtney Ch’ng Lancaster, Laura Condlln, Frank Cox O’Connell, Kyra Harper, Soulpepper Founding Members Stuart Hughes and Diego Matamoros, and Michelle Monteith. Idomeneus is designed by Lorenzo Savoini (set and lighting), Gillian Gallow (costumes), and Debhasis Sinha (sound).
Canadian Premiere
Idomeneus runs from March 3 to 24, 2018. Opening night is March 8. American Sign Language (ASL) interpreted performances are March 20 and 23, 2018.
Animal Farm

The tyrannical Farmer Jones must be overthrown! How long will the animal utopia last when a charismatic new leader emerges? An innovative new adaptation of George Orwell’s classic satire bites just as much today as when it was first written. The cast: Leah Cherniak, Oliver Dennis, Raquel Duffy, Miriam Fernandes, Rick Roberts, Paolo Santalucia, Sugith Varughese, Guillermo Verdecchia, Jennifer Villaverde, Michaela Washburn, and Sarah Wilson. Animal Farm is designed by Ken MacKenzie (set, costumes, and video), André du Toit (lighting), and Richard Feren (sound).

Animal Farm runs from March 9 to April 7, 2018. Opening night is March 15.
SOULPEPPER MUSIC
Each original Soulpepper Concert revolves around a time, place, or artist crafted by a team of incomparable performers. The Concert Series is led by Slaight Family Director of Music Mike Ross.
Prohibition, the Concert
Gangsters, flappers, booze and jazz - prohibition didn’t stop the party, it only forced it underground where it thrived. Music Director Mike Ross invites audiences to the Distillery District for a night of stories and songs from the “dry” days of the Roaring Twenties.
