Tarragon Theatre announces the world premiere of Hamlet,
set to open at Tarragon Theatre this January. The classic play
written by William Shakespeare is reimagined with a rock and roll
lens under the direction of Tarragon’s own Richard Rose.
Hamlet
has its world premiere in Tarragon Theatre’s Mainspace from
January 2 - February 11, 2018 (opening January
10).
Young Prince Hamlet seeks to avenge his father’s death in a world
torn apart by political deception. Shakespeare’s best-known tragedy
is reimagined on the Tarragon stage through the powerful lens of
rock and roll.
Part concert, part radio play, part performance - Hamlet
connects the fear in the political climate of Hamlet’s time to the
disruptive nature of rock and roll and the current rise of
skepticism in the age of “alternative facts.”
In Hamlet, classic text is paired with contemporary music to reflect the rage
of young people, bringing renewed relevance to contemporary
audiences. Generations have turned to the loud, pulsing music of
rock and roll to find release and express feelings of anger,
overwhelming emotion and anguish.
Thomas Ryder Payne’s compositions provide the ideal lens to realize Hamlet’s struggles as he grapples with the decision to avenge his father’s
death.
“We’re so excited to have the world premiere of Hamlet
at Tarragon Theatre,” notes director Richard Rose.
Of his inspiration to use rock and roll in this reimagining Rose
continues, “Fans of new contemporary works will enjoy a highly
original production, while fans of Shakespeare will see a beloved
classic told in a new way. Rock and roll provides the perfect lens
to make Hamlet’s struggle relatable to us in 2018.”
